Equalization Director Lilla resigns

BROOKINGS – Brookings County Director of Equalization Chris Lilla will leave his post Friday following the Brookings County Commission’s approval of his resignation during its Dec. 27, 2018, meeting.

Lilla is resigning in order to begin work as the Minnehaha County director of equalization. He’ll begin that job on Monday. He has served as the director for Brookings County Equalization since 2016.

Lilla said he has been honored to serve in this position and added that he is confident in his office’s ability to continue to manage things well during this transition period.

“The county is in good hands; we’ve got good statistics, good numbers. I’ll be leaving the office in a very good position for the year-end stuff. We could print our assessment notices today if we needed to. We’re well ahead of the game. The numbers look good and have already been submitted to Pierre. We have good, well-trained staff,” he said.

With advertising for the job to begin promptly, Brookings County Commission Department Director Stacy Steffensen said, advertising will close in a couple of weeks. After that, the main task will be for the commissioners to schedule interviews with job candidates.

As briefly mentioned during the Dec. 27 meeting, the county commissioners could appoint an interim equalization director until someone is hired. Either way, the county expects it to take perhaps about a month to fill the position.
