Brookings Health System and Community Blood Bank are joining forces to help ward off winter blood shortages by hosting a blood drive from 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, in the Sioux Falls Regional Bloodmobile in the Brookings Hospital parking lot. All blood donations will stay local for local use.

Better Choices, Better Health Chronic Disease workshop will be held Tuesdays, Jan. 8-Feb. 12, at the SDSU Wellness Center, 1401 N. Campus Dr. The sessions will take place from 9:30 a.m.-noon.
Workshop topics include: managing pain, fatigue and stress; tips for healthy eating, personal exercise plans; relaxation techniques; medication how-tos; dealing with emotions; and working better with your doctor and care team.

The next Adult Craft Class at the Brookings Public Library is set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, in the upstairs Cooper Room. This week, participants will make wire and nail polish flowers. South Dakota Art Museum is hosting a guest lecture, “Harvey Dunn and the WWI American Expeditionary Force Artists” by Ranelle Knight-Lueth, Ph.D. The lecture begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, and guests are invited to come at 6:30 to view the Harvey Dunn: War Works exhibit prior to the start of the talk.
Knight-Lueth is an expert on the combat art of World War I, having written her dissertation about Harvey Dunn and his fellow American Expeditionary Force artists. She will discuss their artwork and the AEF combat art program based on research she conducted. South Dakota Art Museum is located at 1036 Medary Ave., Brookings.

Brookings American Legion Post No. 74 will hold a pancake, sausage and eggs breakfast from 8:30-11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at the post home, 1229 Western Ave.
Proceeds will be used to support the Boys State, Youth Trooper Academy, and American Legion Baseball programs. The American Legion Auxiliary will also hold a bake sale during the breakfast.

The Dakota Territory Gun Collectors Brookings Gun Show is set for Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 12-13, at the Swiftel Center in Brookings. Saturday hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and admission is $5.

Brookings Park and Recreation will host a Winter Survival Class from 10:30 a.m.-noon Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Larson Nature Center in Dakota Nature Park. Cost is $10 for participants ages 8-12 years old. The class is limited to 14 participants.
Come learn the basics of survival if you get lost outside during the winter: building a shelter, starting a fire, first aid and more. Come dressed for the weather as the group will put its new skills to the test outside.
