The Brookings Public Library will host a free screening of the movie “Rocketman” starting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8. Rated R, 121 minutes. Free popcorn will be served.

Bring your device and stop in for Drop-in Tech Help from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, in the Brookings Public Library’s Technology Services office, located near the newspapers. Patrons will be helped on a first-come, first-served basis.

Brookings Birding Club will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, at the Larson Nature Center of Dakota Nature Park. Meagan Figura, graduate student at SDSU, will present her research about upland game birds. The public is welcome to attend.

Thursday, Jan. 9

If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from 12:30-4 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.

The Brookings Arts Council’s Fine Art Photography Reception will be held from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, at 524 Fourth St., with the awards ceremony set for 5 p.m.

There are now two ways to attend English at the Pub lectures: in person at Jim’s Tap, and by tuning in to a live stream from the comfort of the Brookings Public Library. The lecture starts at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9.

The Brookings Public Library will host its next Game Night from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, at Wooden Legs Brewing Co., 309 Fifth St. A variety of games will be available to play, or feel free to bring your own to get a group going.

The Dakota Prairie Elementary PTA will host Bingo Night from 7-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, in the school lunchroom at 111 26th St. S., Brookings.

Saturday, Jan. 11

Brookings Birding Club will take a field trip from 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, Jan. 11. Meet in the parking lot of the Larson Nature Center. Bring your binoculars and cameras, and dress warm in layers. Everyone is welcome.

Brookings American Legion Post No. 74 will hold a pancake, sausage and eggs breakfast from 8:30-11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, at the post home, 1229 Western Ave. Proceeds will be used to support the Boys State, Youth Trooper Academy, and American Legion Baseball programs. The American Legion Auxiliary will host a bake sale during the breakfast.

The annual Dakota Territory Gun Show brings together gun collectors, historians, and enthusiasts at a two-day collectors show set for Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 11-12, at the Swiftel Center. Saturday hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and admission is $5. Attendees will get the opportunity to learn about the history of guns, as well as how to maintain and care for guns. The event will include ammo, knives, reloading supplies, silencers/suppressors, collector decoys/advertisements/fishing tackle and gun raffles. Brookings County Youth Mentoring Program will host Monday Morning Mentoring Meet-Ups at the downtown Kool Beans Coffee. From 7:30-8:30 a.m. each Monday in January, a BCYMP representative will buy coffee for anyone who’d like to learn more about the non-profit’s mission. To learn more about the role mentoring plays in the community and to find opportunities to support BCYMP, visit https://bcymentoring.org/ or call 697-0444.
