Thursday, Jan. 9

If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from 12:30-4 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.

There are now two ways to attend English at the Pub lectures: in person at Jim’s Tap, and by tuning in to a live stream from the comfort of the Brookings Public Library. The lecture starts at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9.

Friday, Jan. 10

Bingo at the Brookings VFW, 520 Main Ave., is from 6:30-10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10. Cards are handed out at 6:30, and bingo starts at 7. Lunch will be available. For more information, call 692-6771.

The Brookings Public Library will host its next Game Night from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, at Wooden Legs Brewing Co., 309 Fifth St. A variety of games will be available to play, or feel free to bring your own to get a group going.

The Dakota Prairie Elementary PTA will host Bingo Night from 7-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, in the school lunchroom at 111 26th St. S., Brookings.

Saturday, Jan. 11

The Brookings Birding Club will take a field trip from 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, Jan. 11. Meet in the parking lot of the Larson Nature Center. Bring your binoculars and cameras, and dress warm in layers. Everyone is welcome.

Brookings American Legion Post No. 74 will hold a pancake, sausage and eggs breakfast from 8:30-11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, at the post home, 1229 Western Ave. Proceeds will be used to support the Boys State, Youth Trooper Academy, and American Legion Baseball programs. The American Legion Auxiliary will host a bake sale during the breakfast.

The annual Dakota Territory Gun Show brings together gun collectors, historians, and enthusiasts at a two-day collectors show set for Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 11-12, at the Swiftel Center. Saturday hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and admission is $5. Attendees will get the opportunity to learn about the history of guns, as well as how to maintain and care for guns. Monday, Jan. 13

Brookings County Youth Mentoring Program will host Monday Morning Mentoring Meet-Ups at the downtown Kool Beans Coffee. Feeding South Dakota will provide free food for families in need at its next mobile food distribution from 9:15-10:15 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, at the Brookings First United Methodist Church parking lot, 625 Fifth St. Food distributions on a first-come, first-served basis provide an assortment of food that may include frozen and fresh produce, frozen meats, assorted breads and/or canned and boxed items. Please bring something to carry your food in, such as coolers, bags or totes. A photo ID is required.

First United Methodist Church will offer Financial Peace University starting Monday, Jan. 13. Area residents are invited to the first class in Dave Ramsey’s nine-week personal finance program from 6-7:30 p.m. Monday in the church’s youth room at 625 Fifth St. Participants can decide from there if they would like to continue with the class. Tuesday, Jan. 14

Connect 2140’s next Lunch & Learn, about city and county government, is set for noon-1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, at the Research Park at SDSU. Brookings Mayor Keith Corbett and Brookings County Commissioner Angela Boersma will be there to talk about some of the exciting things happening as well as answer any questions.

All veterans are welcome to Warriors Rock at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. The free program will provide individualized guitar instruction and music experiences to support veterans. Join the Brookings Fiberworks Guild for at two-part Advanced Knitting Techniques Class, from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14 and Jan. 21, at the South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum, 977 11th St. The project made in these classes will be a winter hat knitted in the round on circular and double pointed needles. Participants will also learn about cables, increasing, and decreasing. The South Dakota Art Museum’s next Lunch & Learn is from noon-1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, and is on “Billie Grace Lynn: White Elephants,” featuring a live video conference discussion with the artist. Bring your own lunch and a friend and the museum will supply plates, cutlery and beverages. Start with a quick visit to the “White Elephants” exhibit and then head downstairs for lunch. The group will connect with Billie Grace Lynn from 12:15-12:50 p.m. (you can eat while we talk).

Bring the kids down to the South Dakota Agricultural Heritage museum to create Make & Take Suncatchers, from 2:30-5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15. They’ll have different farm animal suncatchers and plenty of washable paint colors to choose from to make a customized suncatcher for your window. The event costs $1 and is open to kids of all ages.
