If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from noon-5 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.

Winners of the Brookings Arts Council’s print and online photography competition will be announced at a reception held from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, at 524 Fourth St. The awards presentation is at 5 p.m.

South Dakota Art Museum is hosting a guest lecture, “Harvey Dunn and the WWI American Expeditionary Force Artists” by Ranelle Knight-Lueth, Ph.D. The lecture begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, and guests are invited to come at 6:30 to view the Harvey Dunn: War Works exhibit prior to the start of the talk.

Knight-Lueth is an expert on the combat art of World War I, having written her dissertation about Harvey Dunn and his fellow American Expeditionary Force artists. She will discuss their artwork and the AEF combat art program based on research she conducted. South Dakota Art Museum is located at 1036 Medary Ave., Brookings.

Friday, Jan. 11

A farewell open house for David Merhib, outgoing president and CEO of the Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce, will be held from 4-6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11, at the Chamber office, 415 Eighth St. S.

The Brookings Public Library’s next Game Night is set for 6:30-9:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11, at Wooden Legs Brewing Company, 309 Fifth St., Brookings. Games will be available to choose from, or feel free to bring your own to play with a group. Check out the event on Facebook to RSVP.

Saturday, Jan. 12

Brookings American Legion Post No. 74 will hold a pancake, sausage and eggs breakfast from 8:30-11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at the post home, 1229 Western Ave.

Proceeds will be used to support the Boys State, Youth Trooper Academy, and American Legion Baseball programs. The American Legion Auxiliary will also hold a bake sale during the breakfast.

The Dakota Territory Gun Collectors Brookings Gun Show is set for Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 12-13, at the Swiftel Center in Brookings. Saturday hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and admission is $5.

Brookings Park and Recreation will host a Winter Survival Class from 10:30 a.m.-noon Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Larson Nature Center in Dakota Nature Park. Cost is $10 for participants ages 8-12 years old. The class is limited to 14 participants.

Come learn the basics of survival if you get lost outside during the winter: building a shelter, start-ing a fire, first aid and more. Come dressed for the weather as the group will put its new skills to the test outside.

The Fiddlers of South Dakota will host an acoustic music jam form 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Brookings Activity Center, 320 Fifth Ave. Visitors are welcome to come sing and play mu-sic, listen, dance or just socialize.

The 27th annual Lamb Bonanza will be held Saturday, Jan.12, in Frost Arena on the SDSU campus. Before tipoff, from 1-2 p.m., members of the South Dakota Sheep Growers Association will serve leg of lamb sandwiches and lamb meatballs on the north side of the track.

This year the Jackrabbit women and men host a double header with Oral Roberts. Tipoff is at 2 p.m. for the women and 4:15 p.m. for the men. During the men’s halftime, six lamb pelts will be auctioned.

Sunday, Jan. 13

Monday, Jan. 14

Tuesday, Jan. 15

Better Choices, Better Health Chronic Disease workshop will be held Tuesdays, through Feb. 12, at the SDSU Wellness Center, 1401 N. Campus Dr. The sessions will take place from 9:30 a.m.-noon.

Workshop topics include: managing pain, fatigue and stress; tips for healthy eating, personal exer-cise plans; relaxation techniques; medication how-tos; dealing with emotions; and working better with your doctor and care team. 1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entrepreneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.

Staff from the office of U.S. Sen. Mike Rounds will visit Brookings from 2-3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, to assist residents with any issues they may have dealing with federal agencies. The staff will be in the County Commission Room of the Brookings City & County Government Center, 520 Third St., Suite 210.
