If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from noon-5 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.

The next Adult Craft Class at the Brookings Public Library is set for 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, in the upstairs Cooper Room. This week, participants will make wire and nail polish flowers. The class is free and open to all, but registration is required to make sure enough supplies are available. Stop by the library or call 692-9407 to register.

The Elkton Community Club’s annual banquet is set for Thursday, Jan. 17, at the Elkton Community Center. The event starts with happy hour at 5:30 p.m., the meal at 6:30 p.m., and entertainment from stand-up comedian Scott Novotny at 7:30 p.m. All are invited to attend, and tickets ($12.50 apiece) are available at Elkton BankStar and CHS. The Brookings Interfaith Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 726 Sixth St. The topic for discussion will be Peace:  According to your faith tradition (world religion), what is peace and how is it to be achieved? What personal and social dimensions of peace are recognized? How do you find peace? The meeting will begin with a potluck. Please bring a passing dish, if able, and remember that many in our interfaith community do not eat pork or may be vegetarian.

The next Third Thursday at the Gardens starts at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, at the McCrory Gardens Education and Visitor Center. Bill Ross and Louise Snodgrass of Good Roots Farm & Gardens will present “Planning Before You Plant: Seed Starting 101.” The class is free and open to the public, but registration is requested at https://www.mccrorygardens.com/registration-form.

The Brookings Library Puppeteers’ next puppet show is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, at the library. All are invited to come enjoy the family friendly fun.

Friday, Jan. 18

Bingo at the Brookings VFW, 520 Main Ave., is from 6:30-10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18. Cards are handed out at 6:30, and bingo starts at 7. Lunch will be available. For more information, call 692-6771.

Saturday, Jan. 19

The fifth annual Prairie Striders Indoor 5K on the SDSU track at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex is set for Saturday, Jan. 19. The race will be run in two heats – one at 8:30 a.m. for those planning to finish in 24 minutes or less and the other at 9 a.m. Doors open at 7:30 a.m. To register, go to allsportscentral.com. The SDSU Department of Teaching, Learning and Leadership’s Family Resource Network will host free “Understanding Me Up to Age 3” parenting classes from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. the next two Saturdays, Jan. 19 and Jan. 26, at the Brookings Public Library, 515 Third St. While there are four sessions, participants are not required to attend all four. However, participants are required to register by contacting the Family Resource Network at 688-5730 or sdsu.frn@sdstate.edu. The Jan. 19 topics are “Why I Do What I Do” and “Keep Me Safe.”

Brookings Area Singles will host a singles dance from 8 p.m.-12 a.m. Saturday, Jan.19, at the McKnight Community Center in White. Highway Call will provide live music. Door prizes will be awarded, and attendees are welcome to bring snacks to share. Admission is $9 for members and $10 for all others 21 years and older.

Sunday, Jan. 20

VFW Auxiliary invites the community to a brunch from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, at the Brookings VFW post home, 520 Main Ave. The menu includes scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausage, toast, coffee and juice for $7.  The Works includes the above breakfast with a separate plate of biscuits and gravy for $9. Children ages 3-7 eat for $4, and 2 and younger are free. Proceeds from the breakfast this month will go to the Brookings High School Band Winter Guard. For more information, call 692-8771.

The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship will be held Sunday, Jan. 20, at the St. Thomas More Activity Center, 1700 Eighth St. S. Registration starts at 1 p.m., and the event is open and free to all boys and girls ages 9-14 years old. For more information, call Adam Longtin at 507-829-3165.

A dance is set for 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, at the Elkton Community Center. Red Suspenders will provide live music, and a potluck lunch is planned. Free will donation. All are welcome.

Monday, Jan. 21

Come and play at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota at its volunteer open house, held from 1-6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, and learn more about opportunities to share your skills. Museum staff and current volunteers will be on hand to give tours and answer any questions.

The South Dakota Art Museum Guild will host a talk by artist Peter Reichardt, studio art lecturer, South Dakota State University School of Design. His talk begins at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, with coffee served at 9:30 a.m. This is free and open to the public; guild membership is not required. BATA bus transportation is available. A Sew Easy: Sewing 101 two-part class will be held form 6-8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 22-23, at the Brookings Public Library. Get to know the sewing machine and basic techniques, plus complete an easy sewing project. Registration is required and limited; please online sign up if you can attend both nights. All are invited to attend the 2019 South Dakota Soil Health Coalition Soil Health Conference and Annual Meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the Brookings Days Inn and Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Club 71 in the at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium on the SDSU campus. The event is free to all 2019 SDSHC members and $25 for non-members. The registration fee includes a 2019 membership and meals.
