1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entrepreneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.

Briggs Library will host Adulting: Cooking for Valentine’s Day from 3-4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7. Come learn how to create a special meal that’s fast, budget friendly, and easy to make in a small cooking space. SDSU senior dietetics student Kylie Serie will share how to make pesto French bread pizza, sparkling raspberry lemonade mocktail, and “fancy” cheesecake. Try a sample while they last.

Music educators from around the state will gather for three days of concerts, workshops and discussions during the South Dakota In-Service Music Conference. The conference, hosted by South Dakota State University Feb. 7-9, will feature performances by approximately 1,000 elementary, middle school, high school and university students. The Feb. 7-8 evening concerts are free and open to the public and will take place in the Performing Arts Center on the SDSU campus. Choral Day is scheduled for Feb. 7. Concerts open to the public include the Elementary Festival Honor Choir directed by Drake University professor Barb Sletto, at 4:45 p.m., and the Festival of Mixed Voices, directed by Brian Schmidt from Baylor University at 7:30 p.m.

The Brookings Arts Council will exhibit the works of Dr. Matthew R. James, Golf: From an Artistic Lens, in its main gallery from Feb. 6-March 1. James’ collection showcases golf through a variety of art pieces featuring print, oil painting, graphite pencil sketching, digital print, three-dimensional modeling, watercolor and golf course architecture representation. A reception is from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at 524 Fourth St., with James giving an artist presentation at 5 p.m. Refreshments and snacks will be provided.

The Brookings Public Library’s next Game Night will be held from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, at Wooden Legs Brewing Co., 309 Fifth St. Games will be available to choose from, or feel free to bring your own to play with a group.

The South Dakota In-Service Music Conference continues at South Dakota State University. Friday evening’s concert features the SDSU Wind Symphony at 7:30 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center. The Boston Brass, this year’s Patricia Noethe Pierce Artists-in-Residence at SDSU, will join them onstage as will guest conductors Bolstad and SDSU Professor Emeritus James McKinney. The George Magistad Lake Campbell Ice Fishing Derby starts at 8 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9. Weigh-in of live fish is any time before 3 p.m. at the Sportsmen’s Club, 46776 220th St., on the shoreline of Lake Campbell a half-mile west of Danceland Road. Entry fee is $15 per person age 13 and older. Also available at the club will be lunch, raffle, door prizes, silent auction, and educational and historical displays. Brookings American Legion Post No. 74 will hold a pancake, sausage and eggs breakfast from 8:30-11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at the post home, 1229 Western Ave. Proceeds will be used to support the Boys State, Youth Trooper Academy, and American Legion Baseball programs. The American Legion Auxiliary will also hold a bake sale during the breakfast.

The South Dakota Art Museum’s fourth annual Family Fun Day will be held from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at 1036 Medary Ave., Brookings. Come enjoy free fun for the whole family, including shrinky dinks, felted pins, seed paper Valentine’s cards, and many more hands-on crafts for kids led by SDAM Guild members. Do you make the best chili? Prove it! Join the Books4Kids program at its second annual chili cook-off starting at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at American Legion Post 74, 1229 Western Ave., Brookings. To pre-register to compete, call 605-783-7715 or email [email protected]; cost is $20. Participants, who need to bring a Crockpot of chili, can also register at the door no later than 4 p.m. for $25. The public is also welcome to buy chili samples for 25 cents apiece and submit their votes. The event also includes a silent auction and a 50/50 drawing. All proceeds go to the Books4Kids program.
