The George Magistad Lake Campbell Ice Fishing Derby starts at 8 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9. Weigh-in of live fish is any time before 3 p.m. at the Sportsmen’s Club, 46776 220th St., on the shoreline of Lake Campbell a half-mile west of Danceland Road. Entry fee is $15 per person age 13 and older. Also available at the club will be lunch, raffle, door prizes, silent auction, and educational and historical displays. Brookings American Legion Post No. 74 will hold a pancake, sausage and eggs breakfast from 8:30-11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at the post home, 1229 Western Ave. Proceeds will be used to support the Boys State, Youth Trooper Academy, and American Legion Baseball programs. The American Legion Auxiliary will also hold a bake sale during the breakfast.

The Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce Public Affairs Committee will host its next legislative forum with Districts 4 and 7 lawmakers from 9-10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, in the third-floor chambers of the Brookings City & County Government Center.

The United States Air Force Heartland of America Band will present a free concert at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, in Larson Memorial Concert Hall in the SDSU Performing Arts Center. The South Dakota Art Museum’s fourth annual Family Fun Day will be held from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at 1036 Medary Ave., Brookings. Come enjoy free fun for the whole family, including shrinky dinks, felted pins, seed paper Valentine’s cards, and many more hands-on crafts for kids led by SDAM Guild members. Activities appropriate for kids of all ages. Do you make the best chili? Prove it! Join the Books4Kids program at its second annual chili cook-off starting at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at American Legion Post 74, 1229 Western Ave., Brookings. To pre-register to compete, call 605-783-7715 or email Books4Kids@PublishPS.com; cost is $20. Participants, who need to bring a Crockpot of chili, can also register at the door no later than 4 p.m. for $25. The public is also welcome to buy chili samples for 25 cents apiece and submit their votes.The event also includes a silent auction and a 50/50 drawing. All proceeds go to the Books4Kids program.

Bangladesh Night, the annual cultural event of SDSU’s Bangladeshi Students Association, starts at 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, in the Student Union’s Volstorff Ballroom. The event showcases Bangladesh’s history, native dress, dance, music and a buffet with Bangladeshi cuisine. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students. Children can attend for free. Tickets can be purchased at the Office of International Affairs in Briggs Library.

Monday, Feb. 11

Feeding South Dakota will provide free food for families in need at its next mobile food distribution from 9:15-10:15 a.m. Monday, Feb. 11, in the parking lot on the west side of First United Methodist Church, 625 Fifth St. Food distributions provide an assortment of food that may include frozen and fresh produce, frozen meats, assorted breads and/or canned and boxed items. Please bring something to carry your food in, such as coolers, bags or totes.

The Carrot Seed Kitchen Co. will host Frost Fest Cookie Make & Take cookie decorating sessions from 6-7 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, with Staci of Fig Tale. Each child will receive three snowy cookies, icings and a palette of sprinkles to create their own frosty cookies. Need help with your taxes? Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program certified volunteers can help you prepare and file your tax return for free. You qualify for this service if your income does not exceed $55,000 and you do not require a Schedule C. VITA will be available from Jan. 29 until Feb. 28, in Harding Hall Room 206, SDSU. The service is available every Tuesday from 9 a.m.-noon, every Thursday from noon-3 p.m., and on Saturdays from 9 a.m.-noon. For more information, contact the site coordinator at victoria.dubbelde@sdstate.edu.

Brookings AARP Foundation TaxAide provides free tax return preparation and electronic filing for taxpayers with low to middle incomes, with special attention to those aged 60 or older. Trained volunteers are available from 1-4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday  through April 11 at the lower level of First Bank and Trust, 520 Sixth St., Brookings. Bring social security cards, photo ID, last year’s tax return and tax records for 2018. No appointment is necessary. Brookings residents unable to come to the site may call LaVonne Tufty at 692-4766 to make arrangements for tax assistance at their place of residence.
