Bingo at the Brookings VFW, 520 Main Ave., is from 6:30-10 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13. Cards are handed out at 6:30, and bingo starts at 7. Lunch will be available. For more information, call 692-6771.

Thursday, Feb. 14

If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from noon-5 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.

The Brookings Public Library’s next Adult Craft Class is set for 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14. Participants will make simple, three-dimensional woven hearts. Registration is required; stop by the library or call 692-9407 to sign up.

Brookings Area Transit Authority management and its board of directors invites the public to a BATA Community Meeting/Service Review at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at the First United Methodist Church Community Life Center. As BATA considers service and fee changes, the group will talk about the community’s transportation needs and what BATA can sustain financially in the future.

The Children’s Museum of South Dakota will host its annual Snow Ball Dance from 6:30-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15. Dress up and get down with music, activities, a photo booth and more. Parents and guardians, enjoy a fun date night out with your kiddos. Admission is $5.

Saturday, Feb. 16

A Plein Air Paint In will be held 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Feb. 16, at Larson Nature Center, facilitated by the Brookings Arts Council. Bring your paints and get inspired sitting next to a crackling fire while gazing at the serene setting of Dakota Nature Park. Artists are encouraged to bring their own supplies and expected to show off their works for a quick show as families flock to Dakota Nature Park for other activities. Admission is free.

An Ice Fishing Derby is set for 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Dakota Nature Park. Bring your family to participate. Basic fishing supplies will be offered if needed, and staff will be on site for assistance. As weather permits, snowshoes, cross-country skiing, sledding and other snowy activities will be available. Admission is free.

The South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum will host a Winter Farmers Market from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16. Relive your summer Farmers Market days and enjoy a variety of local producers and crafters from the Brookings Farmers Market and Ag Museum. Admission is free.

Frostbite Frolic, a non-timed social run hosted by Prairie Striders, starts at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Innovation Village. Get a jumpstart on your running season and stretch those legs with as many laps as you can handle. A potluck begins at noon with the 2018 awards presentation to follow. Admission is free.

Midwest Maidens Roller Derby will host a chili feed from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Bethel Baptist Church. Warm up with hot chili and all the fixings plus a helping of cornbread for a free-will donation. Take a lunch break and help support the women of the local roller derby.

Sap on Tap: The Story of McCrory Maple Syrup will be held from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at McCrory Gardens Education & Visitor Center. Experience the gardens in the winter and learn the story of Sap on Tap. Participants get an insider’s look at which trees produce syrup and how it’s made, while also sampling syrup for comparison. Connect with the crew to discover, learn, research and enjoy the plants and process at McCrory Gardens. Admission is free.

The Brookings Gaming Championships will be held from 3-10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Wooden Legs Brewing Co. The fundraising event for the Brookings Regional Humane Society will feature tournaments of all your favorite video games, modern and classic. Cost is $5 per game entry. Colman Fire and Rescue will host a Rocky Mountain Oyster Feed starting at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at the fire hall on Main Street. Pork loin will be available for those who do not want oysters, and CS Entertainment from Colman will provide music starting at 9 p.m.

The 2019 South Dakota State University Honor Band Festival will be held Feb. 15-16 in the Performing Arts Center on campus. The finale concert for the festival, which is hosted in the Larson Memorial Concert Hall, begins at 7 p.m. Feb. 16 and is free for the public to attend. The concert features the High School Festival Band and the High School Honor Wind Ensemble, both competitively auditioned ensembles featuring 130 talented students from South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa and Nebraska. The concert will also feature the SDSU Wind Symphony, under the direction of Jacob Wallace, SDSU’s director of concert bands. For more information, contact the School of Performing Arts at 688-5187.

Sunday, Feb. 17

VFW Auxiliary invites the community to a brunch from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, at the Brookings VFW post home, 520 Main Ave. The menu includes scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausage, toast, coffee and juice for $7. The Works includes the above breakfast with a separate plate of biscuits and gravy for $9. Children ages 3-7 eat for $4, and 2 and younger are free. For more information, call 692-8771. Proceeds from the breakfast this month will go to the Brookings Figure Skating Club. Tickets for the April 6-7 show “Wizard of Oz on Ice” will be available for purchase at the brunch, and all who attend are eligible for a drawing for free tickets. Several cast members will also be at the brunch.
