Brookings Friends of NRA will host a fundraising banquet Thursday, Feb. 20, at the Brookings Inn, with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 per person or $60 per couple. They are available at The Exchange, 322 Main Ave., at the door, or online at www.friendsofnra.org. The event will include auctions, games and raffles, and money raised will benefit firearms and hunter safety programs, educations events and wildlife conservation.

The Brookings Public Library will host a free screening of the movie “Joker” starting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20. Rated R, 122 minutes. Free popcorn will be served.

The next Third Thursday at McCrory Gardens, set for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, will focus on botanical research at South Dakota State University. Dr. Maribeth Latvis and students from the Botanical Society of America SDSU Chapter will talk about the role of natural history collections, such as SDSU’s own Taylor Herbarium. Rebecca Kuehl will present the 2020 Victor K. Webster Lecture, “Creating Common Ground in a Contentious Political Climate,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, at the South Dakota Art Museum. Her presentation focuses on her research into the speeches of South Dakota Sen. Tom Daschle with specific focus on how he used his leadership speeches to reach across the political aisle to create common ground.

The Brookings Arts Council will host a Picture Frame Doodle Weaving class from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, at 524 Fourth St. Attendees will learn to wrap a frame loom and then use a spontaneous method of weaving design to complete a textural doodle weave that will then be hung from a dowel or stick. American Legion Post 114 will host a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Volga Community Center, 109 Samara Ave. The menu includes all-you-can-eat pancakes, biscuit and gravy, sausages, coffee, juice and milk.

Brookings American Legion Post No. 74 will hold a pancake, sausage and eggs breakfast from 8:30-11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at the post home, 1229 Western Ave. Proceeds will be used to support the Boys State, Youth Trooper Academy, and American Legion Baseball programs.

Come learn the stitches, tools and techniques you need to get started with crochet. The Brookings Public Library will host a Beginner Crochet Class from 9:30-11:30 a.m. or 2:15-4:15 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, for those ages 16 and older. Reynold Nesiba, minority whip of the South Dakota Senate, will conduct an open forum on bills in the Legislature this session from 10:30 a.m.-noon Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Brookings Activity Center. The event is sponsored by the Brookings County Democrats. Nesiba will also be a special guest at the legislative forum from 9-10:30 a.m. in the city-county building featuring legislators from Districts 4 and 7. The events are free and open to the public.

The Brookings Arts Council will host a Repousse (Ray poo Say) What is that you say? class from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at 524 Fourth St. In this low teach class, attendees will form decorative metalwork from flat sheet metal. Get hands on in the first 15 minutes of class and make something beautiful to adorn a wood or metal project, a crystal decanter, a Christmas tree or anything! Cost is $25. SDSU’s Bangladesh Night 2020, showcasing the unique culture, festivities and history of Bangladesh with cuisine highlighting the authentic taste of Bangladeshi food, starts at 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, at Volstorff Ballroom in the University Student Union. Monday, Feb. 24

Feeding South Dakota will provide free food for families in need at its next mobile food distribution from 10:15-11:15 a.m. Monday, Feb. 24, at the Volga Community Center, 109 Samara Ave. Food distributions on a first-come, first-served basis provide an assortment of food that may include frozen and fresh produce, frozen meats, assorted breads and/or canned and boxed items. Please bring something to carry your food in, such as coolers, bags or totes. A photo ID is required.

Tuesday, Feb. 25

The next meeting of the South Dakota Art Museum Guild will feature artist Erik Ritter, who will share his artwork and lead the group in a short “DeJunked Art” project. Materials will be supplied, but feel free to bring any objects you’d like to include in DeJunked artwork. Coffee is from 9:30-10 a.m., followed by the program from 10-11 a.m. at the museum.

Brookings AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is open to help people prepare their 2019 tax returns from 1-4 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays until April 15, in the lower level of First Bank and Trust, 520 Sixth St. in downtown Brookings. No appointment is necessary. This free service is available to low- and moderate-income taxpayers of all ages with special attention to those age 60 and older. Brookings residents unable to come to the site may call LaVonne Tufty at 692-4766 to make arrangements for tax assistance. Individuals should have all of the documents they need to file before coming to the site, including Social Security cards, photo IDs, a copy of last year’s tax return, and tax records for 2019.

All veterans are welcome to Warriors Rock at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. The free program will provide individualized guitar instruction and music experiences to support veterans.
