The next meeting of the South Dakota Art Museum Guild will feature artist Erik Ritter, who will share his artwork and lead the group in a short “DeJunked Art” project. Materials will be supplied, but feel free to bring any objects you’d like to include in DeJunked artwork. Coffee is from 9:30-10 a.m., followed by the program from 10-11 a.m. at the museum.

Brookings AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is open to help people prepare their 2019 tax returns from 1-4 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays until April 15, in the lower level of First Bank and Trust, 520 Sixth St. in downtown Brookings. No appointment is necessary. This free service is available to low- and moderate-income taxpayers of all ages with special attention to those age 60 and older. Brookings residents unable to come to the site may call LaVonne Tufty at 692-4766 to make arrangements for tax assistance. Individuals should have all of the documents they need to file before coming to the site, including Social Security cards, photo IDs, a copy of last year’s tax return, and tax records for 2019.

All veterans are welcome to Warriors Rock at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. The free program will provide individualized guitar instruction and music experiences to support veterans. A Typewriter Project Launch will start at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, at the Brookings Public Library. Learn about the Community Typewriter program and display, hear Michael Keller discuss the impact of the technology, and watch the award-winning documentary “California Typewriter.”

The Mickelson Middle School spring choir concert starts at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, at SDSU’s Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center.

Wednesday, Feb. 26

1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entrepreneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.

Movie Night at Impact Church in Aurora starts at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26. Come for a free screening of “A Dog’s Journey” and enjoy free popcorn.

Bring your device and stop in for Drop-in Tech Help from 6:30-8:30 p.m. every Wednesday in the Brookings Public Library’s Technology Services office, located near the newspapers. Patrons will be helped on a first-come, first-served basis.

Thursday, Feb. 27

If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from 12:30-4 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.

The Elkton Community Child Care and Education Center will host the next Third Thursday Supper, held from 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, at the Elkton Community Center, 109 N. Elk St. Members will serve homemade soup, sandwiches, dessert and beverages. Cost is $5 per person or $20 for a family.

Brookings NAMI is sponsoring a special showing of the PBS movie “God Knows Where I Am” starting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, in Cooper Room A at the Brookings Public Library. This award-winning documentary is a moving story about one person’s (Linda Bishop) struggle with mental illness leading to her death in an abandoned farmhouse in New Hampshire. Discussion will follow the movie. Coffee and cookies will be served.

The Brookings Interfaith Dialogue will gather at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 726 Sixth St. A potluck meal will be followed by a discussion on “Spiritual Responsibilities and Limits in the Realm of Political Process.” Attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable food item for a group donation to a local food pantry or Feeding South Dakota.

An All-Schools Band Concert starts at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, at Brookings High School, 530 Elm Ave. Grades 5-12 band students from three district schools present the mid-winter concert. Admission is free, with free-will offering taken by Band Boosters.

The SDSU Concert Band, under the direction of Kevin Kessler, presents “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” starting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, at the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center. The musical journey will feature works by Nicole Piunno, Aaron Perrine, Ralph Vaughan Williams and John Philip Sousa. The band is joined by Choralia, under the direction of Laura Diddle, and the Statesmen, under the direction of Andrew Robinette.

The Brookings Public Library will host Trivia Night starting at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28. This is a non-pub pub-quiz, so ages 16 and up are invited to join. Popcorn is provided. Contact the library to register your team of four or fewer.

Jumpin’ Jacks, the SDSU student improv group, will perform at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, in the Fishback Studio Theatre in the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center. The performance is recommended for mature audiences only.

Saturday, Feb. 29

A Kiwanis pancake feed will be held from 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 29, at the First United Methodist Church Community Life Center, at the corner of Sixth Street and Seventh Avenue in Brookings. The menu includes sausage, beverages, and all-you-can-eat pancakes. Cost is $8, with kids 5 and younger eating for free.

The Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce will host a District 7 Legislative Forum starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 29, in the third-floor chambers of the Brookings City & County Government Center, 520 Third St. Submit your questions ahead of time by emailing info@brookingschamber.org.

The Brookings Salvation Army will host a Kettle Cook-off Chili Feed fundraiser from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 29, at the Brookings VFW, 520 Main Ave. This event is open to the public. A free-will donation will be accepted in exchange for unlimited chili, and desserts will be for sale.

The Brookings High School Diversity Fair will be held from 4-7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 29, at the BHS Auxiliary Gym. Local groups will have booths to show examples of their cultures in food, dress or celebration.

Brookings Community Theatre presents the 2020 Musical Theater Talent Showcase, performances from select famous musicals, from 7-9:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 29, at the Wilbert Square Event Center. Admission is $10, and tickets can be purchased online at www.brookingscommunitytheatre.org. Hors d’oeuvres will be served, and wine and beer will be available for purchase.

India Night 2020 starts at 6 p.m. Sunday, March 1, in Volstorff Ballroom at SDSU’s Student Union. Cost is $10 for SDSU students, $15 for faculty and non-students, and $5 for children. Come join in for an evening filled with Indian folk dances, music and traditional food.
