The Brookings Public Library will host Trivia Night starting at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28. This is a non-pub pub-quiz, so ages 16 and up are invited to join. Popcorn is provided. Contact the library to register your team of four or fewer.

Jumpin’ Jacks, the SDSU student improv group, will perform at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, in the Fishback Studio Theatre in the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center. The performance is recommended for mature audiences only.

Saturday, Feb. 29

A Kiwanis pancake feed will be held from 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 29, at the First United Methodist Church Community Life Center, at the corner of Sixth Street and Seventh Avenue in Brookings. The menu includes sausage, beverages, and all-you-can-eat pancakes. Cost is $8, with kids 5 and younger eating for free.

The Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce will host a District 7 Legislative Forum starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 29, in the third-floor chambers of the Brookings City & County Government Center, 520 Third St. Submit your questions ahead of time by emailing info@brookingschamber.org.

As the Brookings FFA Chapter celebrates National FFA Week, the Brookings FFA Animal Nursery will be open from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 29, in the BHS ag classroom, on the south side of the school next to the greenhouse. Free-will donations will be accepted for the Brookings FFA community service project.

The Brookings Salvation Army will host a Kettle Cook-off Chili Feed fundraiser from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 29, at the Brookings VFW, 520 Main Ave. This event is open to the public. A free-will donation will be accepted in exchange for unlimited chili, and desserts will be for sale.

The Brookings High School Diversity Fair will be held from 4-7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 29, at the BHS Auxiliary Gym. Local groups will have booths to show examples of their cultures in food, dress or celebration.

Brookings Community Theatre presents the 2020 Musical Theater Talent Showcase, performances from select famous musicals, from 7-9:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 29, at the Wilbert Square Event Center. Admission is $10, and tickets can be purchased online at www.brookingscommunitytheatre.org. Hors d’oeuvres will be served, and wine and beer will be available for purchase.

Brett Young will bring The Chapters Tour, along with special guest Matt Ferranti, to the Swiftel Center when he performs live in concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 29. Sunday, March 1

India Night 2020 starts at 6 p.m. Sunday, March 1, in Volstorff Ballroom at SDSU’s Student Union. Cost is $10 for SDSU students, $15 for faculty and non-students, and $5 for children. Monday, March 2

The Brookings Public Library will begin “The Misinformed in an Age of Disinformation and Conflict” lecture series at 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 2, in the library’s Cooper Room. These lectures will continue on Mondays throughout March and will end on April 6. On March 2, Robert Burns will discuss “How America Lost Its Mind: The Assault on Reason That’s Crippling Our Democracy” (2019) by Thomas E. Patterson. This lecture will consider the many forces at work today that pose a threat to an informed citizenry by fostering the spread of disinformation and manufacturing conflict, leading to a misinformed and angry bloc of voters.

Tuesday, March 3

Brookings AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is open to help people prepare their 2019 tax returns from 1-4 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays until April 15, in the lower level of First Bank and Trust, 520 Sixth St. in downtown Brookings. No appointment is necessary. This free service is available to low- and moderate-income taxpayers of all ages with special attention to those age 60 and older. Brookings residents unable to come to the site may call LaVonne Tufty at 692-4766 to make arrangements for tax assistance.  

Individuals should have all of the documents they need to file before coming to the site, including Social Security cards, photo IDs, a copy of last year’s tax return, and tax records for 2019.

Brookings Community Sing will gather from 5:30-7 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Join in to sing Irish songs, songs by your favorite Irish artist or songs that include the color green. All are welcome.

All veterans are welcome to Warriors Rock at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. The free program will provide individualized guitar instruction and music experiences to support veterans. Wednesday, March 4

1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entrepreneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, March 4, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.

Bring your device and stop in for Drop-in Tech Help from 6:30-8:30 p.m. every Wednesday in the Brookings Public Library’s Technology Services office, located near the newspapers. Patrons will be helped on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from 12:30-4 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.
