Vote centers will be open from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, for the Brookings City Council election. Candidates Leah Brink, Mary Kidwiler and Holly Tilton Byrne are vying for two three-year seats on the council. Registered voters, regardless of where they live in Brookings, can visit any one of four vote centers in Brookings: Brookings Activity Center, 320 Fifth Ave.; Bethel Baptist Church, 714 17th Ave. S.; Holy Life Tabernacle Church, 241 Mustang Pass; or the SDSU Alumni Center, 815 Medary Ave.

Brookings AARP Foundation TaxAide provides free tax return preparation and electronic filing for taxpayers with low to middle incomes, with special attention to those aged 60 or older. Trained volunteers are available from 1-4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday through April 11 at the lower level of First Bank and Trust, 520 Sixth St., Brookings. Bring social security cards, photo ID, last year’s tax return and tax records for 2018. No appointment is necessary. Brookings residents unable to come to the site may call LaVonne Tufty at 692-4766 to make arrangements for tax assistance at their place of residence.

Prairie Repertory Theatre will hold a youth audition for its summer production of “The Wizard of Oz.” Children and an accompanying parent/guardian are invited to attend an audition at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, in the Performing Arts Center’s Larson Concert Hall on the South Dakota State University campus. Children should be in the fourth grade or older and should be under 5 feet tall. Wednesday, April 10

1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entrepreneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, April 10, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.

The Salvation Army will host a Share the Warmth Spring Clean-Up Donation Drive from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, at Faith Reformed Church,1330 Main Ave. S., Brookings. Area residents are invited to ecumenical lunches Wednesdays through Lent at First Lutheran Church in the Activity Center. Lunch is served beginning at 11:30 a.m., and worship begins at 12:10 p.m. The cost for the soup, sandwich, cookie and coffee lunch is $6.50, with proceeds benefitting the Brookings Ministerial Voucher program.

South Dakota State University’s School of Design will host Mike Marks as the studio art juror for the 2019 Student Juried Exhibit, held annually in Grove Hall’s Ritz Gallery. Marks’ prints and drawings have shown both nationally and internationally. Marks will deliver a public lecture at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, in the South Dakota Art Museum’s auditorium.

Award-winning illusionist and entrepreneur Harris III will be the keynote speaker at the 14th-annual South Dakota Entrepreneurship Education Conference, which will take place April 12 in the Dana J. The 2019 Republican Lincoln Day Dinner is set for Friday, April 12, at the Swiftel Center in Brookings. The social hour starts at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner and a program at 6:15 p.m. Speakers will include U.S. Sen. Mike Rounds, District 4 Sen. John Wiik, District 7 Sen. V.J. The annual South Dakota State University School of Performing Arts Spring Festival of Music includes five concerts held April 12-14 at the SDSU Performing Arts Center. The festival kicks off with Jazz Ensembles and Jazz Combos at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 12, featuring nationally acclaimed beat-boxing saxophonist Derek Brown and director Yiqun Chen. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. A family package is available for $30. SDSU students receive free admission with an ID. The purchase of one ticket admits its holder to all five festival concerts. Saturday, April 13

Brookings American Legion Post No. 74 will hold a pancake, sausage and eggs breakfast from 8:30-11 a.m. Saturday, April 13, at the post home, 1229 Western Ave. Proceeds will be used to support the Boys State, Youth Trooper Academy, and American Legion Baseball programs. The American Legion Auxiliary will also hold a bake sale during the breakfast.

The annual PTA-sponsored Hillfest fundraising carnival will be held from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at Hillcrest Elementary School. This long-standing family-friendly fundraiser generates thousands of dollars with children’s carnival games, raffle prizes for all ages and a variety of concessions. The event is open to the public. Ticket prices remain unchanged for 2019: just 20 cents per ticket if purchased before April 12, and 25 cents each when purchased during the evet.
