Steven Wingate will read from his new novel, “Of Fathers and Fire,” and hold a book talk at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, in the Briggs Library Daschle Archive on the South Dakota State University campus. The event is open to the public. (This event was originally scheduled for the Great Plains Writers’ Conference, April 12-14.)

1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entrepreneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, April 24, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.

The South Dakota Art Museum is hosting a free public artists reception to celebrate “Flourish: Marjolein Dallinga & Jantje Visscher,” which opened Feb. 26 and runs through Aug. 4. Light hors d’ouevres and refreshments will be served from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, April 24. An artist talk featuring Marjolein Dallinga begins at 5:45. The launch of the 2019 issue of “Oakwood,” South Dakota State University’s literature and arts annual, will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, in the Briggs Library Daschle Archive on the SDSU campus. The event is open to the public. (This event was originally scheduled for the Great Plains Writers’ Conference, April 12-14.)

If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from noon-5 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.

The Brookings newcomer program, Beyond Connections, will host a Welcome Social for new residents and community members from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, April 25, at The Pheasant Restaurant & Lounge. The goal of the event is for new residents to network with others in the community. The social event will include a special wine tasting and appetizers. Attendees may also purchase other beverages. The event is for adults ages 21 and older. The event is free of charge. Those interested in attending should RSVP to stacy@brookingsedc.com by April 24.

The Brookings Interfaith Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 25, at United Church of Christ, Brookings. A potluck will be followed by a broad-ranging discussion regarding “Faith Responses to Refugees and Immigrants.” Come add your voice to a myth-busting exploration of immigration. Please bring a potluck dish to pass, if you’re able, or just show up for the evening. All are welcome. Please be aware that many in our interfaith community do not eat pork or may be vegetarian.

The 30th annual Kay Cheever Arbor Day Run (or walk) for Shade is at 6:30 a.m. Friday, April 26. Registration starts at 5:30 a.m. at the Performing Arts Center. There is no pre-registration. Helpline Center will host a free, eight-hour Youth Mental Health First Aid course from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, April 26, at the Boys & Girls Club, 1126 Southland Lane, Brookings. The course teaches adults assisting young people with a five-step action plan to offer initial help to young people showing signs of mental illness or in crisis, and connect them with the appropriate professional, peer, social or self-help care. The City of Brookings will host a ceremonial tree planting and dedication at 12:15 p.m. Friday, April 26, at the Fishback Soccer Complex, 1100 20th St. S., north entrance. A free cherry tree seedling will be given to all attending the event. All are welcome.

KSDJ 90.7 is hosting the fifth annual May Day Music Festival at South Dakota State University. It will feature live music, student performers, and student organization booths and vendors. The festival will be held from 5-10 p.m. Friday, April 26, in Jack’s Place in the basement of the University Student Union. The event is free and open to the public.

Brookings Critical Mass will hold its monthly bike ride at 6 p.m. Friday, April 26. This month, the group will tour the town’s water infrastructure. Meet at the corner of Fifth Street and Main Avenue, and participants will head out together for a casual, all-ages bike ride (about one hour). They usually eat downtown afterward. The Brookings High School music department will present its ninth annual A Flood of Jazz, featuring music from the great jazz rock bands of the ’70s. The evening’s theme is “Saturday in the Park” and will feature high school jazz band, vocal jazz and jazz strings players at 7 p.m. Friday, April 26, in Wilbert Square Event Center, 929 25th Ave. The fundraiser benefits the entire BHS music department. Brookings American Legion Post No. 74 will hold a pancake, sausage and eggs breakfast from 8:30-11 a.m. Saturday, April 27, at the post home, 1229 Western Ave. Proceeds will be used to support the Boys State, Youth Trooper Academy, and American Legion Baseball programs.

The 29th annual Brookings County Veterans Memorial pork feed fundraiser is set for 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 28, at the South Dakota National Guard Armory, Fifth Street South, Brookings. The menu includes a pork sandwich, baked beans, potato salad, ice cream and drink for $7 for adults and $3 for kids under 10. VFW Loyalty Day will follow at 2 p.m. at the post home.

Eric Bergeson, author of “Successful Gardening on the Northern Prairie,” will give a presentation about gardening in cold climates and alkaline soils from 2-3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 28, at the South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum. He will also answer questions from attendees and sign books, which will be available for purchase in the museum store.
