Delta Dental’s mobile dental truck is coming to Brookings during the week of May 20. The truck will be parked at the Brookings Area United Way in Brookings at 619 Fifth Ave. Brookings Area United Way is hosting the truck to care for children who can’t afford or access a dentist because of cost, lack of insurance, transportation, or other reasons. Children from their first tooth through age 21 are eligible. Registration in advance is needed, and a patient consent and information form must be completed. To make an appointment,  call 211. Feeding South Dakota will provide free food for families in need at its next mobile food distribution from 12:15-1:15 p.m. Monday, May 20, at the Elkton Community Center. Food distributions provide an assortment of food that may include frozen and fresh produce, frozen meats, assorted breads and/or canned and boxed items. Please bring something to carry your food in, such as coolers, bags or totes.

The Brookings Public Library will host a free screening of the movie “Blackkklansman” at 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 20. Rated R, 135 minutes. Free popcorn is included.

Bingo at the Brookings VFW, 520 Main Ave., is from 6:30-10 p.m. Monday, May 20. Cards are handed out at 6:30, and bingo starts at 7. Lunch will be available. For more information, call 692-6771.

Girl Scouts – Dakota Horizons will host a Get to Know Girl Scouts event from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, at the Brookings Public Library.

Join Craig Pahl with the Brookings Area Master Gardeners for a class on container gardening at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, at The Carrot Seed Kitchen Co., 310 Main Ave. Bring your own pot and leave with a new plant to care for throughout the summer. This class is great for adults wanting to learn more about patio gardening or for a child/parent activity. Dirt and plants are provided, but participants need to bring their own 7”x7” (or smaller) pot. Tickets are $5 per person and available at mkt.com/carrot-seed-kitchen.

1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entrepreneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 22, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.

If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from noon-5 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.

The Brookings Public Library’s next Adult Craft Class is set for 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 23. Participants will make paper embroidery. Registration is required; stop by the library or call 692-9407 to sign up.

Come support the Boys & Girls Club’s Performing Arts Club when they present “The Wizard of Oz” at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 23, at the club, 1126 Southland Lane. Admission is free, and there is no ticket required to attend.

Saturday, May 25

Brookings American Legion Post No. 74 will hold a pancake, sausage and eggs breakfast from 8:30-11 a.m. Saturday, May 25, at the post home, 1229 Western Ave. Proceeds will be used to support the Boys State, Youth Trooper Academy and American Legion Baseball programs. This will be the last pancake breakfast until this fall.

The Brookings Farmers Market is open from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, May 25, in the 300 block of Sixth Avenue, between the Brookings Public Library and the Brookings County Courthouse.

After weather canceled the event in April, The Carrot Seed Kitchen Co. is hosting a Downtown Clean-up on Saturday, May 25, in downtown Brookings. 

Stop at The Carrot Seed (10 a.m.-5 p.m.) or its booth at the Brookings Farmers Market (9 a.m.-noon) for plastic shopping bags and gloves. Then, venture out into the downtown area (or beyond) and pick up litter. Return to The Carrot Seed/Farmers Market to toss your collected trash and redeem your reward of a $5 gift card (while they last) or a sustainable prize (reusable straw, reusable produce bag, or dishware made from recycled milk jugs).

Commencement ceremonies for the Brookings High School Class of 2019 start at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 26, at the Swiftel Center.
