Three-time Iditarod participant, writer, speaker and wilderness advocate Karen Land and her dog Noggin will be at the Brookings Public Library at 7 p.m. Monday, June 10, to give a presentation on their experiences. Land will guide attendees through this amazing annual 1,049-mile race across Alaska. Everyone is invited to come hear her, meet Noggin, and ask questions.

The annual Harvest Festival is set for Monday and Tuesday, June 10-11, in Elkton. Monday events include the Miss Elkton pageant, starting at 7 p.m. at the community center, and a street carnival with rides, games and food booths starting at 5 p.m. both nights.

Tuesday, June 11

The South Dakota Art Museum’s next lunch-and-learn event will focus on “Harvey Dunn: Fences, Cows, Plows & Oxen” with curators Jodi Lundgren and Taylor McKeown from noon-1 p.m. Tuesday, June 11. Bring your own lunch (they’ll supply plates, cutlery and beverages) and eat while learning about this engaging exhibition. The pair will lead an interactive gallery discussion from 12:15-12:45 p.m., with time on either end to eat or explore other exhibits. Holy Life Tabernacle invites all area children to its annual Kids’ Night Out starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, at 241 Mustang Pass, Brookings. The evening will feature fun, games, clowns, a treasure hunt, singing and Bible stories. The church hopes to give away 25 new bicycles this year. A Sea-World bouncer system will also be available for all of the children to enjoy. 1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entrepreneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, June 12, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.

The Brookings Public Library will host its annual bike rodeo at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, on Kidoodle Way, outside the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Kids are invited to bring their bikes to test their skills on the obstacle course, learn bike safety from the Brookings Police Department, and then decorate their bikes for the bike parade. The event is free and open to all.

Brookings Area Community Band’s season-opening concert is set for 7:30 p.m. Sunday, June 16, at the Pioneer Park Bandshell. “A World of Adventure” – The band pays tribute to the great American summer vacation with folk songs, medleys and other musical reminders of far-away places. In case of rain, concerts start at 7:45 p.m. and are moved indoors to the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center. Each evening, a complimentary snack will be served by band volunteers. For more information on how to join the band or about the series, call Kathy Larsen at 695-0397.
