The Eastern South Dakota Soil and Water Research Farm 25th annual field day, “The Hidden Benefits of Cover Crops,” is set for Tuesday, June 18, at 3714 Western Ave. (1.5 miles north of the Highway 14 bypass on Western Avenue). Brent Yantis from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Regional Application Center will bring the Earth as Art exhibit to the Brookings Public Library from June 15-July 22 and will give a talk on the out-of-this-world exhibit at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 18. The Earth as Art gallery exhibit features remarkable images of the surface of the Earth that have been captured by remote sensing devices aboard Landsat and other satellites.

Wednesday, June 19

1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entrepreneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, June 19, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.

The Brookings Public Library will host Mr. Twister at 1 and 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 19. Entertaining the library for years with balloons, Mr. Twister will make you laugh until you cry.

Thursday, June 20

If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from noon-5 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.

The 2019 Brookings Kite Festival is set for Saturday and Sunday, June 22-23, at the Fishback Soccer Park. Saturday hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. This free annual event features hand-built show kites of all shapes and sizes and the opportunity for you to fly kites you bring or buy at the festival. The Dakota Royal Charity Draft Horse Show, featuring top six-horse hitches from across the U.S., is coming to the Swiftel Center on Saturday and Sunday, June 22-23. The Brookings Radio Research Club will hold its annual Amateur (Ham) Radio Field Day event on Saturday, June 22, and Sunday, June 23. The event will be held at the Brookings Gun Club located 2 miles east of I-29 on Highway 14 on the north side of the road. This event is open to the public, and all are invited to attend anytime from 1 p.m. Saturday to 1 p.m. Sunday. There will be a ham radio licensing test session at 3 p.m. Saturday at the event. This is for a new license or upgrading a present license. There is a $15 FCC fee for electronic processing and submital to the FCC. Brookings Area Community Band’s next concert is set for 7:30 p.m. Sunday, June 22, at the Pioneer Park Bandshell. “The Big Top Comes to Brookings” – Children’s night at the community band captures the wonder and magic of a traveling circus. In case of rain, concerts start at 7:45 p.m. and are moved indoors to the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center.
