Saturday, July 6

The city of Flandreau will recognize its 150th anniversary with a Sesquicentennial Celebration July 2-7. Saturday, July 6, events include a community walk/run from 8-9:30 a.m.; community breakfast at the Japanese Gardens, 8-11 a.m.; Tiger McGlone Open golf tournament starting at 8:30 a.m.; petting zoo and superheroes at the Flandreau City Park from 11 a.m- 2 p.m.; car show at the Moody County Courthouse, 1-3 p.m.; inflatable entertainment park at Royal River Casino from 2-8 p.m.; and a dance at the Japanese Gardens featuring Wolfhound from 7-11 p.m. See the full schedule of events at the Flandreau 150th Anniversary Celebration Facebook page.

The Brookings Farmers Market is open from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, July 6, in the 300 block of Sixth Avenue, between the Brookings Public Library and the Brookings County Courthouse.

Sunday, July 7

The city of Flandreau will recognize its 150th anniversary with a Sesquicentennial Celebration July 2-7. The week of events wraps up with a fly-in breakfast fundraiser at the Flandreau City Airport from 8 a.m.-1 p.m.

The Brookings County Museum in Volga’s City Park is open 1-4 p.m. daily, seven days a week.

Brookings Area Community Band’s next concert is set for 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 7, at the Pioneer Park Bandshell. “Heroes and Villains” – Good always triumphs over evil in this concert featuring music spanning over 100 years. In case of rain, concerts start at 7:45 p.m. and are moved indoors to the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center. Each evening, a complimentary snack will be served by band volunteers. Monday, July 8

Feeding South Dakota will provide free food for families in need at its next mobile food distribution from 9:15-10:15 a.m. Monday, July 8, at the Brookings First United Methodist Church, 625 Fifth St., in the west parking lot. Food distributions provide an assortment of food that may include frozen and fresh produce, frozen meats, assorted breads and/or canned and boxed items. Please bring something to carry your food in, such as coolers, bags or totes.

Wednesday, July 10

1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entrepreneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.

The South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum’s Summertime Food Trucks & Fun Series continues from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, at 977 11th St. This week the museum will host the Nick’s Hamburger Shop food truck, plus live music from Contae Loch. The event is open to the public.

The Traveling Lantern Theatre Company will present “My Mother the Astronaut” at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, at the Brookings Public Library. Aquarius’ mom is an astronaut, and today is “Take Your Child to Work Day.” Aquarius can’t wait to go to NASA and find out what it’s like to be in space.

If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from noon-5 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.

Downtown at Sundown is a free music series held from 5-9 p.m. every Thursday from July 11 to Aug. 22 in the 300 block of Fifth Street. It features free admission, free kids’ activities, cold drinks and local food. The action kicks off July 11 with headliner Surfin’ Safari. This golden oldies band will have you dancing all the way to the hop! Get ready to sing along to songs from The Beatles, the Beach Boys, Sam Cooke and more. This five-member band brings a dynamic vocal arrangement and even does a few a cappella songs.

Brookings Community Theatre will host a Mamma Mia! movie and wine fundraiser Thursday, July 11, at Brookings Cinema 8 Theatre.
