Wednesday, July 10

1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entrepreneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.

The South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum’s Summertime Food Trucks & Fun Series continues from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, at 977 11th St. This week the museum will host the Nick’s Hamburger Shop food truck, plus live music from Contae Loch. The event is open to the public.

The Traveling Lantern Theatre Company will present “My Mother the Astronaut” at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, at the Brookings Public Library. Aquarius’ mom is an astronaut, and today is “Take Your Child to Work Day.” Aquarius can’t wait to go to NASA and find out what it’s like to be in space.

Thursday, July 11

If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from noon-5 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.

Downtown at Sundown is a free music series held from 5-9 p.m. every Thursday from July 11 to Aug. 22 in the 300 block of Fifth Street. It features free admission, free kids’ activities, cold drinks and local food. The action kicks off July 11 with headliner Surfin’ Safari. This golden oldies band will have you dancing all the way to the hop! Get ready to sing along to songs from The Beatles, the Beach Boys, Sam Cooke and more. This five-member band brings a dynamic vocal arrangement and even does a few a cappella songs.

Brookings Community Theatre will host a Mamma Mia! movie and wine fundraiser Thursday, July 11, at Brookings Cinema 8 Theatre. Saturday, July 13

The Beef and Eggs 5K starts at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 13, near the Brookings County Courthouse. The entry fee for the race is $30. Race day registrations will be accepted from 7-7:30 a.m. in front of the courthouse. Awards will be presented to overall top finishers and age group categories. All participants will receive a T-shirt and they can enjoy a beef and eggs breakfast after the race. Come support the Flying Jacks Club at the SDSU Fly-in Breakfast, held from 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, July 13, at the Brookings Regional Airport. Breakfast will be provided for free-will donation at this family-friendly event. All ages can enjoy the variety of aircraft on display, and the Flying Jacks will sell T-shirts and apparel raffle tickets during the event. There will also be an opportunity to dunk their chief flight instructor and chief aircraft mechanic in a water tank. Proceeds help members attend professional development activities in aviation.

The 48th annual Brookings Summer Arts Festival is set for Saturday and Sunday, July 13-14, at Pioneer Park. Saturday hours are 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Visitors are invited to come enjoy the work of 200 artists, 38 food booths, 26 edibles and naturals artisans, antique and living history booths, a children’s area and entertainment on three stages. Midwest Maidens will host its roller derby home opener against the Minnesota Southbound Rollers on Saturday, July 13, at the Swiftel Center. Doors open at 5 p.m., and the teams roll at 6 p.m. General admission is $12, and $10 for seniors, students and military. Kids 10 and younger get in free.
