Thursday, Aug. 8

The Helpline Center’s Brookings Brown Bag Lunch Series continues from noon-1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, at the Research Park at SDSU, 2301 Research Park Way, Suite 146. The topic is volunteerism and the “why” in giving back. Area volunteers will be answering questions on why they volunteer and what makes an opportunity meaningful. Bring your questions and your lunch.

If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from 12:30-4 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.

Downtown at Sundown is a free music series held from 5-9 p.m. every Thursday through Aug. 22 in the 300 block of Fifth Street. It features free admission, free kids’ activities, cold drinks and local food. The action continues Aug. 8 with local opener Victor Cajiao and headliner Soca Jukebox. This five-piece ensemble will transport you to the islands with a blend of reggae, calypso, country and rasta-goodness. Folks of all ages will enjoy the charisma, humor and shimmering steel pans that is Soca Jukebox.

Bingo at the Brookings VFW, 520 Main Ave., is from 6:30-10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9. Cards are handed out at 6:30, and bingo starts at 7. Lunch will be available. For more information, call 692-6771.

The Brookings Public Library’s next Game Night will be held at 6:30-9:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, at Wooden Legs Brewing Co., 309 Fifth St. There will be games available to choose from, or feel free to bring your own to play with a group.

The 10th annual Camaro Fun Days in Brookings will be held Saturday, Aug. 10, in Pioneer Park. Parade line-up is at 9 a.m. on east side of the park, and then back to the park for fun, music and door prizes. At about 2:30 p.m., the group cruises to Oakwood Lakes State Park.

A benefit bake sale for Brady Triebwasser will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, at Volga Christian School. Brady, 7 months old, is the son of Logan and Ashley Triebwasser. Proceeds will go toward Brady’s second heart surgery.

PAW Patrol Live! “The Great Pirate Adventure,” an action-packed, music-filled production, is coming to the Swiftel Center Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 10-11. The heroic pups from the top-rated animated preschool series PAW Patrol embark on a pirate-themed adventure to uncover hidden treasure during the hit live stage show. A “Regenerating Our Rural Communities” field day in regenerative agriculture will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, at Blue Dasher Farm, 46958 188th St., Estelline, the wood house with a purple roof at the corner of exit 157 on Interstate 29. The event will feature several speakers, a roundtable discussion, and a free locally catered supper to follow for 200 attendees.

The American Legion family of Hoffman-Townsend Post 74 is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the forming of the national Legion organization. All area veterans, active service members, national guard and any and all military service related organizations are invited to come celebrate, starting at 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, at the post home, 1229 Western Ave., Brookings. Festivities will include activities for children, entertainment and a supper served at 6 p.m. with a short program at 6:30 p.m.

The Brookings County Museum in Volga’s City Park is open 1-4 p.m. daily, seven days a week.

Monday, Aug. 12

Feeding South Dakota will provide free food for families in need at its next mobile food distribution from 9:15-10:15 a.m. Monday, Aug. 12, at the Brookings First United Methodist Church, 625 Fifth St., in the west parking lot. Food distributions provide an assortment of food that may include frozen and fresh produce, frozen meats, assorted breads and/or canned and boxed items. Please bring something to carry your food in, such as coolers, bags or totes.

The Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce Public Affairs Committee will host Lunch with a Legislator with U.S. Sen. John Thune starting at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, at the Wilbert Square Event Center. There will be a moderated question-and-answer session followed by Thune answering questions from the audience. Tickets are $25 for Chamber members and $50 for non-Chamber members. Nashville band Outer Vibe will perform live starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, at the Skinner’s Pub Courtyard, 300 Main Ave. The trio’s mission is to make rock ‘n’ roll fun again by incorporating the best elements of ’90s pop, swagger rock, reggae, feel-good anthems and hip-hop.

Wednesday, Aug. 14

1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entrepreneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.

The Jacks’ Farmers Market will be outside the SDSU Student Union from 3-6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14. The event is open to the public, and free parking is available in the hourly pay lot south of the Wellness Center.The market will include Brookings Farmers Market favorites, including local food, baked goods, coffee and handmade products. SDSU is hosting exercise classes every 30 minutes alongside other health and wellness activities.
