Hi Neighbor Days continue Saturday, Aug. 17, in Toronto with area rummage sales. A 5K Family Fun Run starts at 8:30 a.m. at Arlo Olson Memorial Park with registration at 8 a.m. That’s followed by a 3-on-3 basketball tournament at 9:30 a.m., kids’ tractor pull at 10:30 a.m., cow pie bingo at 11 a.m. and watermelon feed at 1 p.m., all at the tennis courts; bean bag tournament and adult minnow races, both at 3 p.m. at the café, and bingo at Blom Prairie Church social hall at 3 p.m. A pork feed sponsored by FBT with donations going to Toronto Fire Department is from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the fire hall, and music by Rollie and Marie Trooien and guests at the music shop start at 6:30 p.m. Karaoke begins at 9 p.m. at the Toronto Café, and the Disney movie “Sandlot” will be shown at dusk at the Arlo Olson Memorial Park. The Ladies Softball League Tournament will also be held Saturday and Sunday at the Dennis Aaberg Memorial Field.

The Brookings Empowerment Project’s second annual rummage and bake sale will be held from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Brookings Activity Center, 320 Fifth Ave. Proceeds help the organization offer temporary housing in the Brookings area, community education and other advocacy projects focused on mental health.

The Brookings Farmers Market is open from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Aug. 17, in the 300 block of Sixth Avenue, between the Brookings Public Library and the Brookings County Courthouse.

“Peter & Wendy” will be presented on Saturday, Aug. 17, at both 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., at First United Methodist Church. The annual Wing & Brew Fest will be held from 4-9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Swiftel Center in Brookings. All activities will take place inside the Swiftel Center arena, so rain or shine, it’s going to be a finger lickin’ fun time. All general admission tickets are $5 for adults. Tickets to sample wings and brews are $1 apiece. Vendors and the Kids Zone with free inflatable games open at 4 p.m. Live music from Too Drunk To Fish starts at 4:30 p.m., followed by Battle of the Brews at 6 p.m., Battle of the Wings at 7 p.m., and the wing-eating contest at 8 p.m.

The Brookings Dance Club invites all dancers 21 and older to its Cool T-Shirts Dance, held from 8 p.m.-midnight Saturday, Aug. 17, at McKnight Community Hall in White. Family Tradition Band will provide live music, and admission is $10 per person.

Sunday, Aug. 18

Hi Neighbor Days activities on Sunday, Aug. 18, in Toronto begin with a pancake feed fundraiser by the Deuel County Sparks 4-H Club from 8-11 a.m. at the fire hall. A community church service will be at the Arlo Olson Memorial Park at 10:30 a.m. followed by an ice cream social at Leganger Church. The menu includes sandwiches, beans, chips, pie and ice cream. A car show starts at noon on the street east of Toronto Café and Lounge. Parade lineup will begin at 1 p.m. at Ag First with a 2 p.m. start. Pickleball will be played at the tennis court following the parade.

The VFW Auxiliary invites the community to a brunch from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, at the Brookings VFW post home, 520 Main Ave. The menu includes scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausage, toast, coffee and juice for $7. The Works includes the above breakfast with a separate plate of biscuits and gravy for $9. Children ages 3 to 7 eat for $4, and 2 and younger eat for free. Proceeds from the breakfast this month will go to the Brookings County Food Pantry. For more information on the brunch, call 692-8771.

The Brookings County Museum in Volga’s City Park is open 1-4 p.m. daily, seven days a week.

Monday, Aug. 19

Feeding South Dakota will provide free food for families in need at its next mobile food distribution from 12:15-1:15 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19, at the Elkton Community Center. Food distributions provide an assortment of food that may include frozen and fresh produce, frozen meats, assorted breads and/or canned and boxed items. Please bring something to carry your food in, such as coolers, bags or totes.

Tuesday, Aug. 20

The Sioux Falls Regional Bloodmobile will be accepting donations at the Brookings Hospital parking lot from 7:30-11 a.m. and 12:30-3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20. Anyone interested in being a blood donor should call 696-8048. Donors must be at least 17 years old (16 years old with a signed parent consent form), weigh 110 pounds or more and be in good general health. Donors should eat and drink plenty of fluids prior to donating blood and must bring a valid ID with them at the time of donation.

Wednesday, Aug. 21

1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entrepreneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.

Thursday, Aug. 22

If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from 12:30-4 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.

Downtown at Sundown is a free music series held from 5-9 p.m. every Thursday in the 300 block of Fifth Street. It features free admission, free kids’ activities, cold drinks and local food. Come close out the 2019 season with headliner the Nathan Dean Band. This four-piece band from Arizona brings a lot of passion to the stage with a mix of classic country roots, original songs and rock and roll.

Friday, Aug. 23

New student move-in day at South Dakota State University starts at 8 a.m. Friday, Aug. 23. Welcome events on campus that evening include a Welcome Picnic at 5 p.m. west of the University Student Union (families welcome), a Jackrabbit Block Party at 6 p.m. on Larson Green, and an SDSU Wellness Center Extravaganza and Dance from 7 p.m.-midnight, with games and inflatables.

The first day of school for most students in the Brookings School District is Friday, Aug. 23. Classes at Mickelson Middle School start Sept. 4.
