New student move-in day at South Dakota State University starts at 8 a.m. Friday, Aug. 23. Welcome events on campus that evening include a Welcome Picnic at 5 p.m. west of the University Student Union (families welcome), a Jackrabbit Block Party at 6 p.m. on Larson Green, and an SDSU Wellness Center Extravaganza and Dance from 7 p.m.-midnight, with games and inflatables.

Brookings Bonanza 2019 will be held from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Aug. 24, at the Brookings Farmers Market for a fun morning of play, biking, local food and historic tours. Guided walk-and-roll tours with the Historic Preservation Commission are at 9:30 a.m., of the Commercial Historic District, and at 10:30 a.m., of the Central Residential District. The Bicycle Advisory Committee will host a 10-mile bike ride starting at 10 a.m. The Brookings Sustainability Council and Public Arts Commission will hand out giveaways while the Brookings Arts Council offers free face painting.

Day 2 of move-in weekend at South Dakota State University is packed full of activities for students. Convocation, with a welcome from SDSU President Barry Dunn and deans, and a picnic are at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at Frost Arena. That’s followed by ThumpStart, a reintroduction to academic advising and resources, student accounts and services, and campus tours. At 7 p.m. is the Campanile Climb. The first 100 students to make it all 179 steps to the top get free SDSU ice cream. The Welcome Back Bash, featuring a foam drop dance, is from 8-11 p.m. in the Jackrabbit Village Plaza.

The Lynn Mennis Memorial Scholarship Beanbag Tournament is set for Saturday, Aug. 24, at The Wild Hare, 303 Third St., Brookings. Registration is at 11 a.m., and shotgun start is at noon. Cost is $50 per two-person team; must be 18 or older to participate. Proceeds will go to students who are planning to go into the building trades and work in South Dakota.

Midwest Maidens Roller Derby presents Caturday Night Fever, its second home bout of 2019, against the Sioux Falls Roller Dollz, starting at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at the Swiftel Center. Tickets are $12 for general admission and $10 for students, seniors, military and public servants. Kids 10 and younger get in free. Doors open at 5 p.m.
