Elkton Hero Days are set for Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 14-15, in Elkton. Saturday events include a 5K at 8 a.m. and a kids’ 1-mile fun run at 8:45 a.m., starting at the football stadium; a softball tournament starting at 9 a.m.; a makers market and a quilt and art show, both from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the community center; a petting zoo, 10 a.m. on Main Street; bouncy houses, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. on Main Street; laser tag, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at First Baptist Church; ECCE Car Smash Fundraiser, 1-5 p.m. at First Baptist Church; kids pedal tractor pull, 2 p.m.; rescue vehicle tours, 3-4 p.m. on Main Street; sidewalk chalk contest, 3-5 p.m. at First Baptist Church; taco truck, 5-8 p.m. on Main Street; and a street dance with DJ River, 7-11 p.m. on Main Street.

The Brookings Farmers Market is open from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Sept. 14, in the 300 block of Sixth Avenue, between the Brookings Public Library and the Brookings County Courthouse.

The Brookings Arts Council will host four, six-week series of music classes that meet every Saturday starting Sept. 14, at 524 Fourth St. Instructor Kristina Gindo will lead Introduction to Guitar for Youth from 9-9:45 p.m.; Kids, You Can Uke! from 10-10:45 a.m.; Introduction to Guitar for Adults from 11-11:45 a.m.; and Adults, You Can Uke! from 12-12:45 p.m.. The Holistic Healing and Psychic Expo will be held from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Swiftel Center in Brookings. Admission is $5. A variety of vendors and exhibitors will offer aromatherapy, healing touch and reiki sessions, along with psychic, tarot and angel card readings, aura photos, body tuning, nutrition, natural skin care and wellness products. The Midwest Maidens will face Skunk River Riot in their next roller derby bout, Queen of the Rink, set for 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Swiftel Center. Doors open at 5 p.m., and admission is $12 for adults, $10 for veterans, public servants, students and seniors, and free for kids 10 and younger.

Sunday, Sept. 15

Elkton Hero Days continue Sunday, Sept. 15, in Elkton. Events include a pancake breakfast benefit for Tony Wiskur, 9 a.m.-noon at the community center; softball tournament, 10 a.m.; parade, 12:30 p.m., north from the football field to Main Street; United Parish Church pie contest with social to follow, 1 p.m. on Main Street; taco truck, 12:30-4 p.m.; bouncy houses, 1-4 p.m. on Main Street; ECCE Car Smash Fundraiser, 1-4 p.m. at First Baptist Church; show and shine, wing contest, and face painting by Miss Elkton, all from 1-3 p.m. on Main Street; and a dance, 1:30-4 p.m. at the community center.

The VFW Auxiliary invites the community to a brunch from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, at the Brookings VFW post home, 520 Main Ave. The menu includes scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausage, toast, coffee and juice for $7. The Works includes the above breakfast with a separate plate of biscuits and gravy for $9. Children ages 3 to 7 eat for $4, and 2 and younger eat for free. Come to the Brookings Public Library at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, in the Cooper Room and meet author C.M. Wendelboe. He is a retired lawman who worked in South Dakota towns bordering three Indian reservations, including Pine Ridge, and now he writes mystery and western novels that are influenced by his experiences. Find his books in the library’s Adult Mystery section.

Bienvenidos a Brookings will host a Soccer Sunday Community Potluck from 3-7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, at Pioneer Park in Brookings. All are invited to come meet their Spanish-speaking neighbors, enjoy a delicious meal and play soccer. Please bring a dish to share. In case of inclement weather, the event will move to the Brookings Multicultural Center, 506 Third Ave.

Sylvia Larson, a South Dakota State University senior from Harrisburg, will perform her senior recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15. The recital will be held in the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center’s Founders Recital Hall on the SDSU campus. Larson, a music education major and clarinetist, will feature various works to resemble a vocal recital as an homage to her South Dakota State University singing career. The event is free and open to the public. The Brookings Arts Council will host Dine and Discuss at noon Monday, Sept. 16, at 524 Fourth St. Bring your lunch and come hear Nick and Joni Schmeichel discuss literacy, community involvement and the importance of arts.

Brookings Health System’s free six-week educational series, Understanding Grief, will begin Monday, Sept. 16. The class series is led by Social Worker Denise Larson. Classes will be held on Mondays at Brookings Health System in Conference Room D. There will be two class sessions and participants may attend either one. The afternoon session will be held from 1-2:30 p.m., and the evening session will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. The content will be the same for both sessions. The free class series is open to everyone. Wednesday, Sept. 18

1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entrepreneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.

The Brookings Interfaith Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, at the Brookings Public Library, Cooper Room A & B. The evening will begin with a potluck; bring a passing dish to share with others while bearing in mind that many of our members are vegetarian or do not eat beef or pork. The discussion topic is “Where can we find hope in a world full of chaos?” Join in for discussion of the concept of hope from various religious perspectives. Feel free to bring a reading or poem regarding hope.

David Reynolds, director of SDSU’s School of Performing Arts, will perform his faculty recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, in the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center’s Founders Recital Hall.
