The South Dakota Festival of Books continues at 9 a.m. Friday with a full day of events at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota, Brookings K-12 schools and the SDSU campus. Workshops are also scheduled at the Brookings City & County Government Center, the Brookings Public Library and at the First United Methodist Church.

The South Dakota Festival of Books continues at 9 a.m. Friday with a full day of events at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota, Brookings K-12 schools and the SDSU campus. Workshops are also scheduled at the Brookings City & County Government Center, the Brookings Public Library and at the First United Methodist Church.

Attendees should head to the Community Life Center, First United Methodist Church, at 1 p.m. for the opening of Exhibitors’ Hall and the “Early Bird” Mass Book Signing, 3:30-4:15 p.m. The evening’s keynotes at the Larson Memorial Concert Hall include a talk by 2018 One Book South Dakota author Thomas E. Patterson at 6 p.m. and a conversation with Alice Sebold, author of “The Lovely Bones,” at 7 p.m.`

The Bobcat Backers welcome all bobcat football fans to gather for a Bobcat Homecoming pre-game celebration from 5-6:15 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, at the west side parking lot at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium. Cubby’s Sports Bar & Grill will serve hamburgers and chips will supplies last. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. BYOB and lawn chair to this fun-filled, spirit-building event. 

Bingo at the Brookings VFW, 520 Main Ave., is from 6:30-10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21. Cards are handed out at 6:30, and bingo starts at 7. Lunch will be available. For more information, call 692-6771.

The Brookings High School homecoming varsity football game vs. Pierre is set for 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, at SDSU’s Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium.

Saturday, Sept. 22

The South Dakota Festival of Books continues at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, when the Exhibitors’ Hall opens. Sessions will take place in the Downtown and Central Historic Districts, including at the Brookings City & County Government Center, the Brookings Public Library, Children’s Museum, Brookings Activity Center, Brookings Arts Council and First United Methodist Church.

The afternoon includes another Mass Book Signing in Exhibitors’ Hall at 1 p.m., and the evening features keynotes in the sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church –”American Wolf” author Nate Blakeslee at 5:30 p.m. followed by a panel on the evolution of coverage of tough topics by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists Timothy Egan and Jacqui Banaszynski at 7 p.m.

SDSU’s School of Performing Arts will hold Piano Day 2018 from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Sept. 22, in the Lincoln Music Hall on campus. This free annual learning event is intended for piano students in sixth through 12th grade.

No advance preparation is required, but students are asked to bring a piece to play. School and private music teachers are also encouraged to attend. To register, email john.walker@sdstate.edu or call 688-5187. Students and teachers can also register from 8:30-9 a.m. Sept. 22.

The fall edition of Junk Jam will be held from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Swiftel Center holding barn. Early bird admission is $15 from 9-10 a.m., and general admission is $5 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

The Brookings Arts Council will host a Watercolor Techniques Class from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at 524 Fourth St. Learn incredible watercolor techniques from one of the top watercolorists in the state. Sunday, Sept. 23

The Pioneer Lutheran Church Fall Festival is set for Sunday, Sept. 23, at the church 4 miles west of White and 2 1/2 miles north on 474th Avenue. The event includes music by Matt Holler at 3:30 p.m., games at 3:30 p.m., a meal from 4:30-6 p.m. and an auction at 6 p.m. The menu includes a pork sandwich, chips, beans, sweet corn, salad, pie and a drink for $8 per plate for adults and $5 for kids’ plates. Proceeds go to the Pioneer Cemetery Fund.

David Reynolds, director of SDSU’s School of Performing Arts and professor of music, will present a faculty recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, in the Lincoln Music Hall’s Peterson Recital Hall. All are invited to attend this free event. For more information, call 688-5187.

The City Surplus Bicycle Auction starts at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, at the Brookings Law Enforcement Center west parking lot, 307 Third Ave.

Billy Wilburn of the SDSU School of Performing Arts will present Super Masks!, a South Dakota Art Museum workshop, from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, in the museum’s multipurpose room. Dip your toes in the Cosplay world and make your own mask, superhero or otherwise using Worbla thermoplastics and other cool materials. Participants will also have the opportunity to explore My Hero! Contemporary Art & Superhero Action exhibition for inspiration and fun.

Cost is $15 for those ages 12 and up, and the registration deadline is Sept. 21. For more information or to register, call 688-5423.

Brookings Health System is launching Joint Camp, a free, 60-minute educational session for individuals in the community who are having, or are thinking about, knee or hip joint replacements. Initial sessions will be held from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Sept. 25, Oct. 30, Nov. 27 and Dec. 18 at Brookings Hospital, Conference Room A.

SDSU associate professor Christine Garst-Santos will receive the sixth-annual J.P. Hendrickson Liberal Arts Faculty Scholar Award and deliver the Herbert Cheever Jr. Liberal Arts Lecture. The award presentation and lecture, sponsored by SDSU’s College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, are scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, in the Volstorff Ballroom of the University Student Union on the SDSU campus.

Wednesday, Sept. 26

1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entre¬preneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.

Elkton United Parish will host a ham supper and country store from 5-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, at 710 Cornell, in the southwest corner of Elkton. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for youth 5-12 years old. The menu includes ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potatoes, coleslaw, cranberry salad, corn, seasoned green beans, buns and homemade pies.

Thursday, Sept. 27

If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from noon-5 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.

Bill Paloski, director of NASA’s Human Research Program, will discuss what a future Mars mission might look like and some of the challenges that must be overcome to maintain the health and performance of crew members aboard such missions, at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, on the South Dakota State University campus. The event at the University Student Union’s Lewis and Clark Room is free and open to the public.

The 47th annual Brookings Ducks Unlimited Banquet is set for Thursday, Sept. 27, at the Days Inn. Raffles and games open at 5:30 p.m., and dinner is at 7 p.m., followed by a live auction. Tickets are available in advance at Gas ‘N Mor and at the door the night of the event and cost $50 for membership and dinner, $20 for a spouse/guest, and $10 for a Greenwing.

An opportunity to continue discussion from Dr. Bart Ehrman’s recent public lecture at the Performing Arts Center will be held from 7-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, in the Student Union, upper level Crest Room. James Murphy, SDSU’s own specialist in biblical studies, will be available to field further audience comments and questions and discuss biblical scholarship in general. The event is open to all and is sponsored by the Department of History, Political Science, Philosophy & Religion and the Philosophy Club.

SDSU senior Sam Ulrich, a music education major from Sioux Falls, will hold a clarinet recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, in the Peterson Recital Hall in the Lincoln Music Hall on campus.
