The Brookings Arts Council’s next session of Dine & Discuss is set for noon-1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, with Steven Wingate presenting “So you want to write a novel?” at 524 Fourth St. The event is free and open to the public.

If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from 12:30-4 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.

A new exhibit by the South Dakota Artist Alliance opened Oct. 9 at the Brookings Arts Council. The exhibit, “Into the Night: Nocturne Paintings,” features over 18 artists and will be on display until Nov. 8. An opening reception will be held from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Oct. 10 with an artist available throughout the reception to comment on their work. Light refreshments will be served. There is no admission charge.

Hot Hockey Nights, a celebration of hockey in Brookings, will be held Thursday, Oct. 10, at the Swiftel Center. Doors open at 5 p.m. There will be awards presentations for the Larson Cup and Ranger Cup and inductions into the Ranger Hall of Fame. Come recognize past players and families who contributed to the success of hockey in Brookings. The banquet also includes raffles and silent and live auctions. The Brookings Public Library will host a free screening of the horror movie “Us” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10. Rated R, 116 minutes. Free popcorn will be served.

Noelle Allerdings, an SDSU senior from Succasunna, New Jersey, and a music education major and trumpeter, will perform her senior recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10. The recital will be held in the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center’s Founders Recital Hall on the SDSU campus. The recital is part of the Never Dark Thursday series. The recital is open to the public and there is no charge for admission. Friday, Oct. 11

The Ice is Nice grand reopening and ribbon-cutting will be held from 12:30-3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, at Larson Ice Center. The ribbon-cutting is at 12:30 p.m., and open skate will free admission follows from 1-3 p.m. There will be complimentary red and blue snow cones, and the first 100 attendees will receive a free skate towel.

The Brookings Public Library’s next Adult Craft Class is set for 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11. Participants will learn how to make Sculpey clay bracelets. Registration is required; stop by the library or call 692-9407 to sign up.

The Brookings Public Library will host its next Game Night from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, at Wooden Legs Brewing Co., 309 Fifth St. There will be games available to choose from, or feel free to bring your own to play with a group. Snacks will be provided.

Saturday, Oct. 12

Brookings Health System and Brookings Hy-Vee will host the annual Super Hero 5K Fun Run and Walk on Saturday, Oct. 12. The race will start and end at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex on the SDSU campus and will include a kids’ 1-mile race at 8:30 a.m. with the main race starting at 9 a.m. Participants are encouraged to dress as their favorite super hero; prizes will be given for the best costumes. Cost is $15 for adults and $7 for the kids’ 1-mile run, with proceeds benefitting BATA. Race packets may be picked up 45 minutes before the kids’ 1-mile start; registration closes at 8 a.m. the day of the race. Participants may register online at brookingshealth.org/SuperHero. Brookings American Legion Post No. 74 will hold a pancake, sausage and eggs breakfast from 8:30-11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at the post home, 1229 Western Ave. Proceeds will be used to support Boys State, Youth Trooper Academy, and American Legion Baseball programs. The American Legion Auxiliary will also hold a bake sale during the breakfast.

All are invited to the annual meeting of the Brookings County Historical Society, starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Brookings County Historical Museum in Volga. The agenda includes election of board members, the annual report, goals of the museum, and the 2019-2020 budget.

The Brookings Arts Council will host an Alcohol Ink on Black Tile class from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at 524 Fourth St. This class with artist Melanie Gabbert-Gatchell will challenge students from sixth grade through adult in exploring and learning how to combine inks to create images on black tiles. Sunday, Oct. 13

The Brookings Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary will host a Fire Prevention Week pancake breakfast from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, at the East Fire Station, at the corner of Sixth Street and 20th Avenue. Pancakes, sausages, eggs and beverages will be served for a free-will donation, with proceeds going to the fire department.

Arlington Trinity Lutheran Church will host a ham dinner from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, in the church fellowship hall, 321 S. Main St., Arlington. The menu includes baked ham, baked potatoes, vegetables, salad, dinner roll and dessert. Cost is $9 for adults, $4 for kids ages 6-12 years, and free for kids 5 and younger. Carryout and delivery meals will be available for $9 apiece; call the church between 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

McCrory Gardens will host its Dog Day of Fall from noon-5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13. Dogs will be allowed in the formal gardens for one day only for $1 per dog. Both dogs and humans are encouraged to come in costume.

The public is invited to attend a diversity potluck and food drive from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, at the McCrory Gardens Education and Visitor Center. The potluck will feature dishes from an array of ethnic and international origins. Those attending are asked to bring a food item (hotdish, salad, bread, or dessert) that is representative of their heritage. Table service, chicken, coffee, punch and water will be provided. Additionally, attendees are asked to bring a nonperishable donation for the local food pantry. Monday, Oct. 14

Feeding South Dakota will pro¬vide free food for families in need at its next mobile food distribution from 9:15-10:15 a.m. Monday, Oct. 14, at the Brookings First United Methodist Church, 625 Fifth St., in the west parking lot. Food distributions on a first-come, first served basis provide an assortment of food that may include frozen and fresh produce, frozen meats, assorted breads and/or canned and boxed items. Please bring something to carry your food in, such as coolers, bags or totes. A photo ID is required.

The next Lunch & Learn at the South Dakota Art Museum will be on “Afghan War Rugs: The Modern Art of Central Asia, featuring a discussion and gallery exploration with Exhibits Curator Jodi Lundgren. Join in at the museum from noon-1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15. An interactive gallery discussion is from 12:15-12:45 p.m. with time on either end to eat or explore. Bring your own lunch and a friend and the museum will supply plates, cutlery and beverages. Admission is free.

1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entrepreneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.

The Friends of the Library Book Sale opens to Friends members only (memberships available at the door) from 6-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, in the upstairs Cooper Room at the Brookings Public Library. There will be thousands of books for both children and adults, and prices range from 50 cents to $2.

Edgewood Healthcare presents speaker Marty Schreiber, former Wisconsin governor and author of “My Two Elaines: Learning, Coping and Surviving as an Alzheimer’s Caregiver,” at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, at Peace Lutheran Church, 1104 22nd Ave. S.
