Brookings American Legion Post No. 74 will hold a pancake, sausage and eggs breakfast from 8:30-11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at the post home, 1229 Western Ave. Proceeds will be used to support Boys State, Youth Trooper Academy, and American Legion Baseball programs. The American Legion Auxiliary will also hold a bake sale during the breakfast.

All are invited to the annual meeting of the Brookings County Historical Society, starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Brookings County Historical Museum in Volga. The agenda includes election of board members, the annual report, goals of the museum, and the 2019-2020 budget.

A Holiday Mashup Craft Show will be held from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at Volga Christian School, 223 E. Sixth St., Volga. Lunch will be available starting at 11 a.m.

A Fall Craft Show & Bake Sale will be held from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Brookings Activity Center, 320 Fifth Ave. Admission is free, and a baked potato bar will be served from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

The first-ever Jim Steen Car Show will be held from noon-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at Mr. V’s Professional Body Shop at 305 Fifth St. S. Come and celebrate the life of Jim Steen with your favorite ride, or just come to see all the classic vehicles. No fees, awards or judging. Just a good time.

The Brookings Arts Council will host an Alcohol Ink on Black Tile class from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at 524 Fourth St. This class with artist Melanie Gabbert-Gatchell will challenge students from sixth grade through adult in exploring and learning how to combine inks to create images on black tiles. Sunday, Oct. 13

The Brookings Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary will host a Fire Prevention Week pancake breakfast from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, at the East Fire Station, at the corner of Sixth Street and 20th Avenue. Pancakes, sausages, eggs and beverages will be served for a free-will donation, with proceeds going to the fire department.

Arlington Trinity Lutheran Church will host a ham dinner from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, in the church fellowship hall, 321 S. Main St., Arlington. The menu includes baked ham, baked potatoes, vegetables, salad, dinner roll and dessert. Cost is $9 for adults, $4 for kids ages 6-12 years, and free for kids 5 and younger. Carryout and delivery meals will be available for $9 apiece; call the church between 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

McCrory Gardens will host its Dog Day of Fall from noon-5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13. Dogs will be allowed in the formal gardens for one day only for $1 per dog. Both dogs and humans are encour-aged to come in costume.

The public is invited to attend a diversity potluck and food drive from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, at the McCrory Gardens Education and Visitor Center. The potluck will feature dishes from an array of ethnic and international origins. Those attending are asked to bring a food item (hotdish, salad, bread, or dessert) that is representative of their heritage. Table service, chicken, coffee, punch and water will be provided. Additionally, attendees are asked to bring a nonperishable donation for the local food pantry. Monday, Oct. 14

Feeding South Dakota will provide free food for families in need at its next mobile food distribution from 9:15-10:15 a.m. Monday, Oct. 14, at the Brookings First United Methodist Church, 625 Fifth St., in the west parking lot. Food distributions on a first-come, first served basis provide an assortment of food that may include frozen and fresh produce, frozen meats, assorted breads and/or canned and boxed items. Please bring something to carry your food in, such as coolers, bags or totes. A photo ID is required.

Tuesday, Oct. 15

The next Lunch & Learn at the South Dakota Art Museum will be on “Afghan War Rugs: The Modern Art of Central Asia,” featuring a discussion and gallery exploration with Exhibits Curator Jodi Lundgren. Join in at the museum from noon-1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15. An interactive gallery discussion is from 12:15-12:45 p.m. with time on either end to eat or explore. Bring your own lunch and a friend and the museum will supply plates, cutlery and beverages. Admission is free.

1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entrepreneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.

The Friends of the Library Book Sale opens to Friends members only (memberships available at the door) from 6-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, in the upstairs Cooper Room at the Brookings Public Library. There will be thousands of books for both children and adults, and prices range from 50 cents to $2.

Edgewood Healthcare presents speaker Marty Schreiber, former Wisconsin governor and author of “My Two Elaines: Learning, Coping and Surviving as an Alzheimer’s Caregiver,” at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, at Peace Lutheran Church, 1104 22nd Ave. S. The Brookings Interfaith Council will next gather at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. A potluck will be followed by the Rev. Isaiah Brokenleg, who will present a brief sketch of some theological themes and stories from traditional Lakota religion. Her presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer session. If able, please bring a potluck dish to pass (bear in mind that many in the interfaith community do not eat pork, beef, or may be vegetarian) and bring a nonperishable food item for the community pantry. The next Third Thursday at McCrory Gardens is on Bulbs & Planting a Spring Garden, starting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17. Registration is requested for this free class at www.mccrorygardens.com. Planting bulbs in the fall can provide some of the earliest flowers and colors for spring. McCrory’s Education Coordinator and Horticulturist Christina Lind will show you some great options to try at home and what to watch for at McCrory.

The Brookings High School Bobcat Orchestra presents its fall concert, “Let’s Go to the Movies,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, at BHS’ Bell Auditorium. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for senior citizens and K-12 students. Activity passes will be accepted. At intermission, the Orchestra Boosters will hold a raffle for two pendants from Riddle’s Jewelry. Raffle tickets are $5 apiece or 5 for $20 and will be available for purchase before the concert and at BHS between Tuesday and Thursday 3:30-4:30 p.m. and Wednesday 2:30-3:30 p.m. All proceeds will go toward the Orchestra Boosters scholarship.
