The Bob Bartling Hobo Day 5K starts at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, in the Taco John’s parking lot. Log onto http://www.prairiestriders.net/hobo-day-5k.html for race details.

Brookings American Legion Post No. 74 will hold a pancake, sausage and eggs breakfast from 8-10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at the post home, 1229 Western Ave.

Proceeds will be used to support the Boys State and American Legion Baseball programs. The American Legion Auxiliary will also hold a bake sale during the breakfast.

The Hobo Day parade starts at 9:30 a.m. Saturday on the South Dakota State University campus. Entries travel south down Medary Avenue, west along Sixth Street and south down Main Avenue.

Sunday, Oct. 14

Arlington Trinity Lutheran Church will host a ham dinner from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14 in the church fellowship hall, 321 Main St., Arlington. The menu includes ham, baked potatoes, vegetables, salad, dinner roll and dessert for $9 for adults and $4 for kids ages 6-12. Carry-out and delivery meals are available by calling 983-5581 between 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church will host a Fall Dinner and Country Store on Sunday, Oct. 14, in Elkton, with serving from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. The menu incudes roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, carrots, dinner rolls and pies. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children 6-12 years old. The event also includes raffle prizes and a game board with cash prizes.

McCrory Gardens will host Dog Days of Fall Sunday, Oct. 14. Garden hours are noon-5 p.m. Dogs will be allowed in the formal gardens for one day only, with a cost of $1 per dog, and dogs and humans are encouraged to come in costume. Monday, Oct. 15

South Dakota State University’s Passive House project will hold a ribbon-cutting celebration at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 15, at 902 Third Ave.

The Brookings Area Quilters Guild will hold its monthly meeting on Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held at the United Church of Christ at 828 Eighth St. S. in Brookings. On the agenda is discussion of the upcoming Christmas gift exchange and program for the next year. All guests are welcome.

Michael Walsh, an associate professor in SDSU’s School of Performing Arts, will perform works by Bizet, Meyerbeer and Rossini during his faculty clarinet recital at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15, in the Peterson Recital Hall on campus. Tuesday, Oct. 16

LEAD Brookings, a chapter of LEAD South Dakota, in conjunction with the Brookings County Democratic Party, will host a nonpartisan review of the amendments and initiated measures on this November’s ballot. The event is set for 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, at Wooden Legs Brewing Co., 309 Fifth St., Brookings. Kathy Tyler will present the measures, background information, and pros and cons from different perspectives. Afterward the group engage in civil discussion with their neighbors. Come learn about Amendments W, X, and Z and Initiated Measures 24 and 25.

Wednesday, Oct. 17

1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entrepreneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.

The Friends of the Library fall book sale is set for Wednesday through Sunday, Oct. 17-21, in the Brookings Public Library Cooper Room. On Wednesday is a Friends-only presale from 6-8:30 p.m. Friends of the Library memberships will be available for sale at the door.

League of Women Voters of South Dakota is hosting an educational forum on legislative redistricting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, at the McCrory Gardens Education and Visitor Center on campus. SDSU political science professor Lisa Hager will speak on gerrymandering at “Will Your Vote Count?” All are welcome.

Anyone in need is welcome to the Share the Warmth event, held from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at Faith Reformed Church, 1330 Main Ave. S., Brookings. Come pick up a coat, snow pants, boots, hat and gloves.

Recipients are asked to come on a schedule based on the first letter of their last name: M-P, 9-11 a.m.; Q-S, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.; T-Z, 1-3 p.m.; A-D, 3-5 p.m.; E-H, 5-7 p.m.; I-L, 7-8 p.m.
