The Brookings Interfaith Council will next gather at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. A potluck will be followed by the Rev. Isaiah Brokenleg, who will present a brief sketch of some theological themes and stories from traditional Lakota religion. Her presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer session. If able, please bring a potluck dish to pass (bear in mind that many in the interfaith community do not eat pork, beef, or may be vegetarian) and bring a nonperishable food item for the community pantry. The next Third Thursday at McCrory Gardens is on Bulbs & Planting a Spring Garden, starting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17. Registration is requested for this free class at www.mccrorygardens.com. Planting bulbs in the fall can provide some of the earliest flowers and colors for spring. The Brookings High School Bobcat Orchestra presents its fall concert, “Let’s Go to the Movies,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, at BHS’ Bell Auditorium. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for senior citizens and K-12 students. Activity passes will be accepted. At intermission, the Orchestra Boosters will hold a raffle for two pendants from Riddle’s Jewelry. Raffle tickets are $5 apiece or 5 for $20 and will be available for purchase before the concert and at BHS between Tuesday and Thursday 3:30-4:30 p.m. and Wednesday 2:30-3:30 p.m. All proceeds will go toward the Orchestra Boosters scholarship.

Autumn Cavender-Wilson will deliver the third-annual bioethics lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, in the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center on the South Dakota State University campus. Her presentation is titled “First Do No Harm: Colonialism and the Weaponization of Medicine.” It is part of the Indigenizing Spaces lecture series. There is no charge for admission and the event is open to the public.

South Dakota State University juniors Cade Bruna and Liz Pauli will hold a joint recital at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, in the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center’s Founders Recital Hall. The students, who are juniors from Madison, will alternate performing throughout the vocal and trumpet recital. Funds will go toward a three-story ministry center to include a school and medical and worship centers.

The Brookings Arts Council will host a three-part Beginning Oil Painting class Friday through Sunday, Oct. 18-20, at 524 Fourth St. Hours are 6-9 p.m. Friday and 3-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Learn how to mix oil painting mediums and to paint a landscape of your choice. The class is open to high-schoolers through adults, and cost is $65.

The fifth annual Uptown Girls Craft Show, sponsored by the Brookings General Federation of Women’s Club, will be held from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the First Lutheran Gym at Eighth Street and Main Avenue, Brookings. Coffee, rolls and lunch will be available through the Mission Coffeehouse supporting the Belize mission, and sponsor proceeds will support community projects.

Brookings Koinonia Group will host its fifth annual arts, crafts and bake sale, raffle and silent auction from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at Bethel Baptist Church, 714 17th Ave. S., Brookings. The raffle is for a handmade, queen-size Native American star quilt; tickets are one for $5 or three for $12. Proceeds will go toward helping the foster children’s program in Brookings and the surrounding areas. A free screening of Fight the New Drugs documentary “Brain, Heart, World” will start at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at Brookings Cinema 8. This is a three-part documentary series highlighting how porn affects individuals, relationships and society as a whole. The VFW Auxiliary invites the community to a brunch from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, at the Brookings VFW post home, 520 Main Ave. The menu includes scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausage, toast, coffee and juice for $7. The Works includes the above breakfast with a separate plate of biscuits and gravy for $9. Children ages 3 to 7 eat for $4, and 2 and younger eat for free. The Brookings Arts Council will host an Alcohol Ink on Black Tile class from 12:30-2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, at 524 Fourth St. This class with artist Melanie Gabbert-Gatchell will challenge students from sixth grade through adult in exploring and learning how to combine inks to create images on black tiles. Monday, Oct. 21

Feeding South Dakota will provide free food for families in need at its next mobile food distribution from 12:15-1:15 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21, at the Elkton Community Center, 109 Elk St. Food distributions on a first-come, first served basis provide an assortment of food that may include frozen and fresh produce, frozen meats, assorted breads and/or canned and boxed items. Please bring something to carry your food in, such as coolers, bags or totes. A photo ID is required.

The dean of pharmacy from the University of Southern California will give the keynote address at the fall convocation for the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions at South Dakota State University. Vassilios Papadopoulos will give the message, “Transforming the face of pharmacy by leading the convergence of science, healthcare and policy,” at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21, in Volstorff Ballroom B in the University Student Union. The public presentation is held in conjunction with the 29th annual Pharmacy Research Presentations, which are from 1 to 3 p.m. in Volstorff Ballroom A. The poster presentations by undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral students will be judged by SDSU faculty members. The exhibits are also open to the public during judging.

The Brookings Public Library will hold a haunted library-themed escape room from Monday, Oct. 21, to Thursday, Oct. 24, with slots starting at 6:15 p.m. each night. In this escape room, teams are trapped in a spine-chilling abandoned library and must find the clues to get out alive. Teams have 20 minutes before the terrifying Book of Shadows sends teams to their grave. This program is free to the public. Participants must be 14 and older. Registration is required due to limited space. Groups of six or fewer can sign up by visiting the circulation desk or contacting the library at 692-9407.
