Dr. Charles Vollan of South Dakota State University will present his lecture, “Unintended Assimilation: The Failure of Alcohol Prohibition on South Dakota’s American Indian Reservations,” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, at the Brookings Public Library. This lecture will focus on alcohol prohibition, which began in what was legally defined as “Indian Country” in 1834, long before state or national prohibition. American officials fought alcohol from the belief that it slowed assimilation, but increased contact with non-Native people brought increased alcohol use.

Thursday, Nov. 7

If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from 12:30-4 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.

All are invited to the opening reception and dance performance for “1 Roof 2 Airs,” held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, at the South Dakota Art Museum. Co-curated by John Schuerman and Katayoun Amjadi, 1 Roof 2 Airs shares the artwork of 10 U.S.-based artists with personal histories from countries experiencing conflict in the Greater Middle East. Light appetizers and refreshments will be served in the gallery. At 5:45 p.m., the museum will host a live dance performance by Leila Awadallah broadcast from Algeria as well as remarks by Schuerman. Awadallah was born in Sioux Falls to a family with diasporic Palestinian roots and is currently on a dance tour in the Middle East and Africa performing dance inspired by Arabic letters.

Gregg Stern will share his accounts of his missions to rescue children from human trafficking and sexual exploitation during a Human Sex Trafficking Symposium, held from 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, in the Woster Celebration Hall of the SDSU Foundation’s Jerome J. Lohr Building.

The Brookings Public Library will host a free screening of the movie “The Public” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7. Free popcorn will be served. Rate PG-13, 122 minutes.

The Brookings Arts Council will host an Acrylic Pour Class from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, at 524 Fourth St. Students will be walked through techniques to create an art piece unlike anything they can get with a brush. Friday, Nov. 8

A Les Tuma Hall of Fame Party will be held from 4-9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, at 9 Bar and Nightclub in Brookings. Come help “ring the bell” to celebrate the SDSU Hall of Fame inductee and raise money for the MS Foundation. There will be silent auctions, raffle prizes and a few other surprises during the night.

The Brookings Arts Council will host a two-part Linoleum Block Printing Class from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, and 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 9, at 524 Fourth St. Students will create a unique piece of art using printmaking methods. Saturday, Nov. 9

Brookings American Legion Post No. 74 will hold a pancake, sausage and eggs breakfast from 8:30-11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at the post home, 1229 Western Ave. Proceeds will be used to support the Boys State, Youth Trooper Academy and American Legion Baseball programs.

The Brookings County Outdoor Adventure Center will host a Pumpkin Chuckin’ contest Saturday, Nov. 9, at 2810 22nd Ave. S. Setup starts at noon followed by the contest at 1 p.m. Bring your own pumpkin launcher, and prizes will be available.

Lake Campbell Lutheran Church will host its annual Lutefisk Supper on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 46610 219th St., Volga. Serving times are at 4:30 p.m., 5:45 p.m. and 7 p.m. The menu includes lutefisk, Swedish meatballs, lefse, flatbread, sweetsoup, holiday cookies and more. Trinity Lutheran Church in Estelline will host a Veterans Day pancake breakfast from 8 a.m.-noon Sunday, Nov. 10, at the Estelline American Legion, 222 N. Main St. Free-will donations will be accepted.

Come watch some of South Dakota’s most talented young women compete for the titles of Miss SDSU/Miss Brookings and Miss Jack’s/Miss Brookings Outstanding Teen. The pageant starts at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, in the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center on the SDSU campus. The winners of this competition will receive various scholarships and advance on to compete in the Miss South Dakota and Miss South Dakota’s Outstanding Teen Competition.
