Brookings American Legion Post No. 74 will hold a pancake, sausage and eggs breakfast from 8:30-11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at the post home, 1229 Western Ave. Proceeds will be used to support the Boys State, Youth Trooper Academy, and American Legion Baseball programs. The American Legion Auxiliary will also hold a bake sale during the breakfast.

The From the Heart Christmas and Craft Sale is set for 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at First Lutheran Church’s Mission Coffee House gym, 337 Eighth St., Brookings.

The SDSU Air Force ROTC will host the 28th annual Veterans Vigil from 10:45 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, through 11:11 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, at the Brookings County Veterans Memorial. Two cadets will guard the memorial at all times during the 24-hour period, which ends with a brief closing ceremony at 11:11 a.m. Sunday with a message from Capt. Riley Hestermann and a flyover by Harry Thompson.

Lake Campbell Lutheran Church will host its annual lutefisk dinner Saturday, Nov. 10. Servings will be at 4:30 p.m., 5:45 p.m. and 7 p.m. Cost is $17 for adults and $8 for children ages 6-12. Children 5 and younger eat for free. The menu will include lutefisk, Swedish meatballs, lefse, flatbread and all the trimmings. For reservations, call Charlotte Syrstad at 693-4325 or Judy Jensen at 692-8781. The South Dakota State University School of Performing Arts will hold its first-ever Fall Festival of Music, featuring four large-ensemble concerts in four days. The SDSU Wind Symphony performs at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, in the Performing Arts Center. This concert is free and open to all.

Sunday, Nov. 11

The Elkton Fire Department will host a Memorial Breakfast Benefit for Naomi Schuurman from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, at the Elkton Community Center. The event will also include kids’ crafts with the Elkton FCCLA, a pie baking contest and a silent auction. The annual Veterans Day program in Brookings starts at 9 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, at the Swiftel Center. Keynote speaker is Brookings Guardsman Patrick Couser. Following the program, everyone is invited to a brief closing ceremony for the Veterans Vigil at the Brookings County Veterans Memorial at 11:11 a.m. Sunday with a message from Capt. Riley Hestermann and a flyover by Harry Thompson, and then to the VFW Post Home at 520 Main Ave. for a potluck dinner. At 2 p.m. the group will extend its celebration of freedom at the VFW George Dokken Post 2118 to include the 100th anniversary of George Dokken’s ultimate sacrifice.

The Higgins-Jessen Auxiliary will host a Veterans Day roast beef dinner at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, at McKnight Community Center in White. All veterans and their families are invited to attend. A short program will follow this dinner.

Monday, Nov. 12

The Veterans Day program in Volga starts at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 12, in the high school gym and features speaker LTC Kyle Korver.

The Veterans Day program in Elkton starts at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 12, at the Elkton School north gym. Coffee and cookies will be available for veterans and their spouses before the program in the lunchroom. The public is invited to attend the program.

Additional Veterans Day observances in Brookings will be held on Monday, Nov. 12, as follows: VFW at 1:30 p.m. at Edgewood Vista and at 3 p.m. at United Living Community; American Legion at Stoneybrook Suites at 1:30 p.m. and the Neighborhoods at Brookview at 3 p.m. Disabled American Veterans, American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary and other organizations are assisting with these programs.

SDSU’s Fall Festival of Music concludes with a special Veterans Day tribute as The Pride of the Dakotas Marching Band presents its biennial indoor concert at 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12, in the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex. Tuesday, Nov. 13

Grow by FarmHer will be held from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, at the Swiftel Center. The event will inspire, educate and empower young ladies, ages 16-22, who are excited about their future in agriculture and give them the opportunity to connect with peers, listen to dynamic speakers, and meet industry leaders. The South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum will present “Precision Agriculture at SDSU: Current and Future” from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, at 977 11th St. The event is free and open to the public. Van Kelley, head of the Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department at SDSU, will speak about current precision ag technology and practices and will discuss what the near future may hold for farming and SDSU students.

The Brookings Interfaith Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, at the United Church of Christ, 828 Eighth St. S. The topic for discussion will be Creation Care – Environmental Stewardship. The meeting will begin with a potluck. Please bring a passing dish, if able, and remember that many in our interfaith community do not eat pork or may be vegetarian. The discussion will center around the faith responses of various world religions to climate change and environmental stewardship concerns.
