Bingo at the Brookings VFW, 520 Main Ave., is from 6:30-10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16. Cards are handed out at 6:30, and bingo starts at 7. Lunch will be available. For more information, call 692-6771.

The Pike-Huska American Legion Post 230 will host a Poultry Bingo Party at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, at the Aurora Community Hall. Prizes are Hy-Vee gift cards. The American Legion Auxiliary will host a soup and sandwich supper, with bars, coffee and drinks, from 5-7 p.m. at Aurora Little Hall.

Brookings High School will present “Disney’s The Little Mermaid” at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, in BHS Bell Auditorium. Reserved tickets are available in the BHS Activities Office from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. and at the door before performances. Cost is $6 for adults and $4 for students.

Old Market Eatery will host Poetry Night from 8-10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, at 424 Fifth St. The event will feature Matt Miller, Christine Stewart, Patricia Zens, Carl Allen, Alexander Hey and others.

Saturday, Nov. 17

The Brookings Holiday Bazaar with a Scandinavian Flair is set for 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at First Lutheran Church, 337 Eighth St., Brookings. Admission is free, and vendor fees will be donated to Teen Challenge. Come enjoy food, handmade and unique items, lefse hot off the grill, and Christmas music.

Coffee and rolls will be available in the Mission Coffeehouse starting at 9 a.m., and soup, sandwiches and dessert at 11 a.m.

A Holiday Shopping Expo will be held from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Swiftel Center in Brookings. Suggested donations of $1 to Project Joy will be accepted. More than 125 vendors will be at the expo.

The Brookings Regional Humane Society will host its annual bake and craft sale from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at 120 Second St. SW, during its holiday photo session event. This year kids’ crafts will also be available.

SDSU clubs will present a Campus Pop-Up Market from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 17, at the South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum, 977 11th St. Items for sale will include cheese boxes, baked goods, Native American beadwork, plants, books and more.

The Burrows-Young American Legion Post will host a Turkey Bingo party starting at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at Sioux Valley High School. Prizes are turkeys, hams and chickens. BBQs, pies and bars will be available for purchase from the Auxiliary, and cash prize raffles will be held throughout the evening. A silent auction is also planned.

Sunday, Nov. 18

The VFW Auxiliary invites the community to a brunch from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, at the post home, 520 Main Ave. 

The menu includes scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausage, toast, coffee and juice for $7. The Works includes the above breakfast with a separate plate of biscuits and gravy for $9. Children ages 3 to 7 years old eat for $4, and 2 and younger are free.

Proceeds from the breakfast this month will go to GAP. For more information, call 692-6771.

The Aurora Events Committee will host its second annual Holiday Cookie Bonanza from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, at Aurora Community Hall. Cookies and baked goods will be for sale, and several vendors will be available to help you get your holiday shopping started.

The Brookings County Outdoor Adventure Center will host pumpkin chucking and free-range time Sunday, Nov. 18, at 2810 22nd Ave. S. Free range time is from 1-5 p.m., and pumpkin chucking is from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Participants will build in advance and bring devices capable of launching pumpkins across the parking lot. A dance will be held from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, at the Elkton Community Center. Howard & Sonja will provide live music, and a potluck lunch is planned. Everyone is welcome.

Come to celebrate the diversity of cultures and customs that SDSU and Brookings have to offer. International Night 2018 starts at 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, in the Volstorff Ballroom. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the Office of International Affairs (Briggs Library, Room 119), or contact Sanmati Jain (690-8366) for more information. Prices are $15 for non-students, $10 for SDSU students with a student ID. Children 12 years old and younger are free.

Monday, Nov. 19

The Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce Public Affairs Committee presents David Owen, president and CEO of the South Dakota Chamber and Industry, at its annual Pre-Legislative Luncheon. 

Doors open at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 19, at the Swiftel Center, and Owen’s presentation begins at noon. Tickets are $25 and include lunch. The Brookings Chamber will also honor Sen. Larry Tidemann and Rep. Spencer Hawley for their years of service with the South Dakota Legislature with a program beginning at 11:30 a.m. RSVP online http://www.brookingschamber.org or call 692-6125.

The Brookings community is invited to a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Swiftel Center at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19, following the Pre-Legislative Luncheon. The ceremony marks the official opening of the renovated banquet and meeting rooms at the Swiftel Center. Following the ceremony, the renovated spaces will be open and available to tour led by Executive Director Tom Richter.

The newly installed technology will be on display to show the amenities available to meeting planners. The ribbon cutting ceremony and tour are free and open to the public.

The Brookings Area Quilters Guild will hold their holiday gathering on Nov. 19, at 6 p.m. in the Coffee House at First Lutheran Church, Brookings.  Members are asked to bring a dish to pass and/or their favorite holiday treat.  There will be a silent auction and gift exchange.

The Mickelson Middle School People of the Past Wax Museum is set for 6:30-7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19, at the BHS Auxiliary and Jostad Gym.

 Bob Thaler and his wife Karen Thaler will describe experiences in Vietnam where Bob was  a 2018 Fulbright scholar in a talk titled Vietnam – A Country and Its People, Not a War on  Monday, November 19  at 7 p.m. at Wooden Legs Brewery, 309 Fifth St. Bob is a professor in the department of Animal Science, College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences.    Karen teaches English at Mickelson Middle School. Tuesday, Nov. 20

SDSU University seniors Tayler Herding, Brooke Ruhd Hockett, Lilit Karapetyan and Kristina Wagner will display their senior exhibit Nov. 19-30 at Grove Hall’s Ritz Gallery on campus. The exhibit is free and open to the public. The Ritz Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A public reception will be held from 5-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20.

The exhibit, titled “New Seasons,” includes graphic design work including brand, logo, business card and pattern designs, a series of ink and paint portraits, paintings, ceramics works, digital animations, prints, book and newsletter designs, hand-drawn illustrations, photographs and mixed media works.

Wednesday, Nov. 21

1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entrepreneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.
