The Brookings Music Teachers Association bi-annual piano ensemble festival will be held from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center. Enjoy piano duets, trios and ensembles of local piano students.

The From the Heart Christmas and Craft Sale is set for 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at the First Lutheran Church Mission Coffeehouse gym, 337 Eighth St., Brookings.

The Holiday Shopping Expo, set for 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Swiftel Center in Brookings, will feature more than 100 vendors to help cross some names off your gift-giving list. The November dance sponsored by the Brookings Dance Club (formerly the Brookings Singles Club) will be held from 8 p.m.-midnight Saturday, Nov. 16, at the McKnight Community Center in White with the band Prairie Thunder providing dance music. Admission is $10 for all dancers over 21 years. There will be door prizes, and all are welcome to bring snacks to share.

Sunday, Nov. 17

Thrivent Community, Hy-Vee and area churches are teaming up to raise money for the Brookings Domestic Abuse Shelter. Various churches will host a meal for a free-will donation throughout the day on Sunday, Nov. 17. The times and meal options are: Breakfast from 9:15-10:45 a.m. at First Lutheran Church, 337 Eighth St.; breakfast from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, 629 Ninth Ave.; roast beef meal at 11:45 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, 1104 22nd Ave. S.; various soups and salads from 4:45-6 p.m. at Ascension Lutheran Church, 2030 Third St. The goal is to raise $20,000 for a kitchen remodel project. The VFW Auxiliary invites the community to a brunch from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, at the Brookings VFW, 520 Main Ave. The menu includes scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausage, toast, coffee and juice for $7. The Works includes the above breakfast with a separate plate of biscuits and gravy for $9. Children, ages 3 to 7 eat for $4, and 2 and younger are free. Grieving? Know someone who is? All are welcome to join a free Surviving the Holidays seminar held from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, at Brookings First United Methodist Church in the church parlor (basement). When you are grieving a loved one’s death, the holiday season can be especially painful. The helps participants discover: How to deal with emotions; what to do about traditions; helpful tips for surviving social events; and how to find hope for the future.

Come celebrate the diversity of cultures and customs that SDSU and Brookings have to offer at SDSU’s International Night 2019, set for 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, in Volstorff Ballroom in the University Student Union. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. The night will be filled with cultural performances, colorful attire and incredible food. Cost is $10 for SDSU students with ID, $15 for non-students, and free for children 12 and younger. Monday, Nov. 18

The Brookings Public Library will host a Scan Day in partnership with Pierre’s South Dakota State Library on Monday, Nov. 18. Scan Day gives participants a chance to preserve old photographs, documents, postcards, etc., by having them scanned and saved at no charge. Participants must register for a 40-minute time slot and can have approximately 10-15 items scanned and saved to a jump drive provided for them. Feeding South Dakota will provide free food for families in need at its next mobile food distribution from 12:15-1:15 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, at the Elkton Community Center, 109 Elk St. Food distributions on a first-come, first served basis provide an assortment of food that may include frozen and fresh produce, frozen meats, assorted breads and/or canned and boxed items. Please bring something to carry your food in, such as coolers, bags or totes. A photo ID is required.

The Brookings County Community and Family Extension Leaders (Extension Homemakers) will meet from 4-5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, at the South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum for a tour. Museum Education Coordinator Sarah Jacobs will tell the group about the “Farm Her” exhibit and other exhibits at the museum. Guests are welcome.

The South Dakota World Affairs Council along with the National Committee on United States-China Relations is hosting China Town Hall, a livestream panel discussion followed by local conversations beginning at 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, at Daktronics Headquarters building 6, 201 Daktronics Drive. Attendees in Brookings will join more than 70 venues across the country for webcast featuring ABC News Chief Anchor George Stephenopoulos as moderator. The two-part program will examine frictions between the United States and China in politics, security and trade that have a direct impact on lives of every South Dakotan, American, and the global community. Refreshments will be served during the break leading into the live discussion at 6 p.m. that will be moderated by Robert Burns, SDSU professor emeritus of political science.

The Brookings Arts Council will host a South Dakota Christmas Ornaments class from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, at 524 Fourth St. Come and make Christmas ornaments in the shape of South Dakota iconic images. The South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum will host a two-part dairy lecture series, with the first part at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, at 977 11th St., Brookings. Do you enjoy fresh cold milk and ice cream? This wouldn’t be possible without electricity. SDSU’s Howard Bonnemann will explore how rural electrification revolutionized dairy production and manufacturing. During this session, learn about the changes on the dairy farm with electricity. The event is free and open to the public, and SDSU ice cream will be served.

The Brookings Public Library welcomes Brenda Hemmelman, collection services librarian from the South Dakota State Library, who will give a lecture on genealogical resources at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18. Attendees will receive an overview of the free genealogical resources available through the South Dakota State Library. She will cover Ancestry Library Edition, HeritageQuest by Ancestry, and other available resources.

A Youth Mental Health First Aid course will be held from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, at Dakota Prairie Elementary School. Contact Michelle Vandeweerd, Brookings School District, at michelle.vandeweerd@k12.sd.us or 696-4714 for more information or to register. Mental Health First Aid is a course that gives people the skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis such as contemplating suicide. The goal is to help support an individual until appropriate professional help arrives.

South Dakota Public Broadcasting’s Science Steve will be the guest during a special edition of the After School Maker Studio, held from 3-5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. The program is for kids ages 5 and older, and registration is required, drop off optional. Cost is $4 for museum members and $5 for non-members.

1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entrepreneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.

As part of the Brookings Public Library’s Native American Speaker Series, Dr. Billie Kingfisher Jr. will present “The Indian Reorganization Act” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20. Kingfisher will present on the landmark legislation – how it was drafted and its impact on South Dakota tribes. While often seen by non-Native scholars as a boon to tribes, it undermined tribal sovereignty and cultural norms through the creation and imposition of tribal governments. Regardless, it is still the foundation of federal Native policy.

Thursday, Nov. 21

If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from 12:30-4 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.

The Brookings Interfaith Council meets at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, at the Brookings Islamic Center, 724 11th Ave. A potluck will be followed by a presentation by Dr. Fathi Halaweish on diversity in Islam. Bring your questions. If able, please bring a potluck dish to pass (bear in mind that many in the interfaith community do not eat pork or beef or may be vegetarian) and bring a nonperishable food item for the community pantry.  All are welcome.

“Mary Poppins,” the Broadway musical, will be staged at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, and Friday, Nov. 22, and at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, in BHS’ Bell Auditorium. Tickets cost $6 for adults and $4 for students and seniors and can be purchased in the BHS Activities Office from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. through Nov. 22. Tickets will also be available at the door before each performance. Activity tickets must be presented at the time of purchase and at the door.
