The Brookings Public Library will host a Scan Day in partnership with Pierre’s South Dakota State Library on Monday, Nov. 18. Scan Day gives participants a chance to preserve old photographs, documents, postcards, etc., by having them scanned and saved at no charge. Participants must register for a 40-minute time slot and can have approximately 10-15 items scanned and saved to a jump drive provided for them. Call 692-9407 or stop by the library to sign up.

Feeding South Dakota will provide free food for families in need at its next mobile food distribution from 12:15-1:15 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, at the Elkton Community Center, 109 Elk St. Food distributions on a first-come, first-erved basis provide an assortment of food that may include frozen and fresh produce, frozen meats, assorted breads and/or canned and boxed items. Please bring something to carry your food in, such as coolers, bags or totes. A photo ID is required.

The South Dakota World Affairs Council along with the National Committee on United States-China Relations is hosting China Town Hall, a livestream panel discussion followed by local conversations beginning at 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, at Daktronics Headquarters building 6, 201 Daktronics Drive. Attendees in Brookings will join more than 70 venues across the country for webcast featuring ABC News Chief Anchor George Stephenopoulos as moderator. The two-part program will examine frictions between the United States and China in politics, security and trade that have a direct impact on lives of every South Dakotan, American, and the global community. Refreshments will be served during the break leading into the live discussion at 6 p.m. that will be moderated by Robert Burns, SDSU professor emeritus of political science.

The Brookings Arts Council will host a South Dakota Christmas Ornaments class from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, at 524 Fourth St. Come and make Christmas ornaments in the shape of South Dakota iconic images. The South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum will host a two-part dairy lecture series, with the first part at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, at 977 11th St., Brookings. Do you enjoy fresh cold milk and ice cream? This wouldn’t be possible without electricity. SDSU’s Howard Bonnemann will explore how rural electrification revolutionized dairy production and manufacturing. During this session, learn about the changes on the dairy farm with electricity. As part of the Brookings Public Library’s Native American Speaker Series, Dr. Billie Kingfisher Jr. will present “The Indian Reorganization Act” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20. Kingfisher will present on the landmark legislation – how it was drafted and its impact on South Dakota tribes. While often seen by non-Native scholars as a boon to tribes, it undermined tribal sovereignty and cultural norms through the creation and imposition of tribal governments. Regardless, it is still the foundation of federal Native policy.
