All veterans are welcome to Warriors Rock at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. The free program will provide individualized guitar instruction and music experiences to support veterans. The Brookings Public Library will host a free screening of the movie “Green Book” at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19. Rated PG-13, 130 minutes. Free popcorn will be served.

The next Hillcrest Elementary PTA meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, in the school lunchroom.

The Mickelson Middle School Orchestra concert starts at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, at the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center at South Dakota State University.

Wednesday, Nov. 20

1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entrepreneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.

Bingo at the Brookings VFW, 520 Main Ave., is from 6:30-10 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20. Cards are handed out at 6:30, and bingo starts at 7. Lunch will be available. For more information, call 692-6771.

As part of the Brookings Public Library’s Native American Speaker Series, Dr. Billie Kingfisher Jr. will present “The Indian Reorganization Act” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20. Kingfisher will present on the landmark legislation – how it was drafted and its impact on South Dakota tribes. While often seen by non-Native scholars as a boon to tribes, it undermined tribal sovereignty and cultural norms through the creation and imposition of tribal governments. Regardless, it is still the foundation of federal Native policy.

Thursday, Nov. 21

A Thanksgiving Bake Sale will be held 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Nov. 21-22, in the lobby of Brookings branch of Dakotaland Federal Credit Union, 2423 Sixth St. All of the proceeds will be match by Dakotaland, with 100 percent of the funds going to the Christmas, Kids and Cops program.

If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from 12:30-4 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.

An artist’s reception for “1 Roof 2 Airs” will be held from 5-7:15 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, at the South Dakota Art Museum, featuring a unique program in the gallery beginning at 5:15 p.m. The event includes curator remarks by Katayoun Amjadi, a memoir reading by Qais Munhazim, and a “One of Many” live interactive performance by Pedram Baldari and Nooshin Hakim Javadi. Light appetizers and refreshments will be served throughout the evening, and seating will be provided in the gallery for the program.

The Brookings Interfaith Council meets at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, at the Brookings Islamic Center, 724 11th Ave. A potluck will be followed by a presentation by Dr. Fathi Halaweish on diversity in Islam. Bring your questions. If able, please bring a potluck dish to pass (bear in mind that many in the interfaith community do not eat pork or beef or may be vegetarian) and bring a nonperishable food item for the community pantry. The next Third Thursday at McCrory Gardens will be “Biol 101: An Introduction to Bats,” starting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21. SDSU biology professor Scott Pederson will cover the biology of bats, their diversity across the globe and in South Dakota, redress myths, and touch upon emerging diseases. The Brookings Arts Council will host a Write and Illustrate Poetry class from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, at 524 Fourth St. Attendees will be guided in free-writing practices, poem composition varieties, editing with others, and creating correlating illustration for their own composed words. “Mary Poppins,” the Broadway musical, will be staged at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, and Friday, Nov. 22, and at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, in BHS’ Bell Auditorium. Tickets cost $6 for adults and $4 for students and seniors and can be purchased in the BHS Activities Office from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. through Nov. 22. Tickets will also be available at the door before each performance. Activity tickets must be presented at the time of purchase and at the door.

Pike-Huska American Legion Post No. 230 will host its Holiday Bingo Party starting at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, at Aurora Community Hall. The Legion Auxiliary will serve a soup and sandwich supper, plus bars, coffee and drinks, from 5-7 p.m. in Aurora Little Hall. Snacks will also be available during bingo in the community hall.

Saturday, Nov. 23

Brookings American Legion Post No. 74 will hold a pancake, sausage and eggs breakfast from 8:30-11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at the post home, 1229 Western Ave. Proceeds will be used to support the Boys State, Youth Trooper Academy, and American Legion Baseball programs. The American Legion Auxiliary will host a bake sale during the breakfast.

An ECCE Christmas Craft Show, bake sale and raffle will be held from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Elkton Community Center. Admission is free, and the event includes a wide variety of craft and vendor booths, silent auction items, bake sale and kids pedal fire truck raffle.

The Brookings Regional Humane Society’s annual bake sale, craft sale and photo sessions are set for 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at 120 Second St. SW. Baked goods, crafts, Norwex and Quail Honey Lotion will be on sale just in time for the holidays. Photo session sign-up is separate and sells out every year. The Brookings Arts Council will host a Found Object Sculpture class from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 23, at 524 Fourth St. Participants will take found objects, from nature or manmade, and create wonderful sculptures with them. Bring your own objects or use some that are already here. All artistic levels are welcome, but must enjoy laughing at mistakes. Cost is $50. All are welcome to the Brookings Figure Skating Club’s 2019 Holiday Exhibition, set for 11:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at Larson Ice Center. Watch figure skaters perform short numbers to demonstrate their new skills learned during the fall session of Park & Rec lessons. There will be routines featuring advanced-level skaters from the Brookings Figure Skating Club, too, and enjoy holiday goodies and warm beverages.

The Brookings Public Library will hold a “write-in” for National Novel Writing Month from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23. Youth and adult aspiring authors of all genres and skill levels are invited to come write, edit, brainstorm and more. Participants will have the chance to speak with other writers, win prizes, and get down to their creative business. Writing resources, snacks, reference and prompt books, power strips and pens will be provided. This program is free to the public.
