Saturday, Dec. 1

Volga Beta Psi’s 38th annual Gallery of Gifts is set for 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Sioux Valley High School gym in Volga. More than 50 vendors will be there, and Boy Scouts will serve lunch from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

The City of Volga and the Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce will host Downtown in December from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, on Kasan Avenue in Volga. The event will include: a free plyoga class (9 and 10 a.m.) and open house at Valley Fitness/Larsen Chiropractic, 9 a.m.-noon; free hot chocolate at Spot On Printing, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.; free pictures with Santa by Bricks Photography at Valley Motor Sports, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.; a chili cook-off at CC Bar and Grill, registration at 11 a.m. and voting from noon-1 p.m.; and a free raffle at Sioux River Outfitters, 2 p.m.

Bring your wish list. Santa, Mrs. Claus and the elves will be at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota’s Café Coteau from 10:30 a.m.-noon Saturday, Dec. 1, for free visits with kids. Don’t forget your camera. Note: admission is required to enter the museum.

The Brookings Figure Skating Club will host its 2018 Holiday Exhibition from 11:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at Larson Ice Center. Come watch figure skaters perform short numbers to demonstrate their new skills learned during the fall session of Park & Rec lessons. There will be routines from advanced skaters as well. All are welcome to this free event.

Viewing of the 32nd annual Festival of Trees at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St., continues through Saturday, Dec. 22. Normal council hours are 2-5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. Thursdays (Dec. 6, 13, 20) have extended hours until 7 p.m. Sundays (Dec. 2, 9) will have special hours of 1 to 4 p.m.

Sunday, Dec. 2

Sinai Fire and Rescue will host a soup and sandwich fundraiser from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at the fire hall for free-will donations.

The Brookings Goodwill of the Great Plains Shoe and Mitten Party will be held from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at the local Goodwill Store, 625 Main Ave. Volunteers will help distribute shoes, socks, hats, mittens and treats to children in need.

FCCLA’s 14th annual Tour of Homes will feature four homes total and is set for 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2. Tickets are $12 apiece and are available at Hy-Vee and First Bank & Trust in advance and at the Brookings High School Commons the day of the event. ProStart Capstone students will operate the Bobcat Bistro, offering coffee and pastries in the BHS Commons starting at 12:30 p.m. The Freshmen FCCLA Chapter will provide childcare for children ages 2-10 during the tour, also at the high school commons. Childcare is open to anyone who has purchased a ticket for the tour, and the cost is a free-will offering.

Enjoy a wintery ride in a horse-drawn carriage through the arboretum at McCrory Gardens with a cup of warm hot chocolate or coffee from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2 and Dec. 9. Santa will also be there! Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for SDSU students and youth (6-15 years) and free for kids 5 and younger. Last ride leaves the event center at 3:30 p.m.

Shop for unique handcrafted gifts from local vendors at the fifth annual Wholesome Makers Market from 2-5:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at the Pheasant Restaurant.

Come celebrate the season with music from the SDSU Concert Choir, Choralia, and the Statesmen at A Choral Yuletide, set for 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1, at Larson Concert Hall in the SDSU Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children, and free for SDSU students with ID.

Monday, Dec. 3

1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entrepreneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.

A felt ornament and tassel-making station will be set up from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, at the South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum, 977 11th St. The event is free and open to all.

If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from noon-5 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.

The Brookings County Drug Court team invites the community to attend a commencement ceremony honoring its newest graduate at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, in the third-floor courtroom at the Brookings County Courthouse, 314 Sixth Ave. The featured speaker is Chad Mansheim, and a reception will follow the ceremony.

The seventh annual Purses for a Powerful Purpose will be held from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at First Lutheran Church, 337 Eighth St., Brookings. The luncheon, sale of gently used purses, jewelry, scarves, Nativity sets and Christmas ornaments, and silent auction are all part of a fundraiser for SDSU and First Lutheran Church – Belize mission partners in service learning. Dee Shanley will speak at the 11:30 a.m. salad and dessert luncheon about her experience as a volunteer sewing teacher in Belize.
