Faculty honored for research, teaching, service

BROOKINGS – South Dakota State University recognized 30 faculty members, researchers and scientists at its annual Celebration of Faculty Excellence banquet held Tuesday in the University Student Union. The event honors faculty members in each of the university’s colleges for outstanding research, teaching and service.

Before the evening banquet, four faculty scholars delivered Sewrey lectures to raise awareness and show scholarship in the categories of research and scholarship, creative and fine arts, teaching and learning, and service.

Teri Johnson delivered the David Fee Memorial Lecture, The Power of Rapport.” Johnson is a lecturer in University College. Fee taught philosophy and religion at SDSU for more than 20 years. Annual presenters of the named lecture are selected based on their topics and contributions to Fee’s example of crossdisciplinary learning, inquiry and collegiality.

Tammy Yonce, flute, and Michael Walsh, clarinet, provided the featured faculty performance.

Named a distinguished professor was: William Gibbons, professor, interim director of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station, associate dean for research in the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences.

Excellence in Teaching and Research awards were awarded to these faculty members:

• Pat and Jo Cannon Intellectual Property Commercialization to Melanie Caffe, assistant professor, agronomy, horticulture and plant science;

• Dr. Sherwood and Elizabeth Berg Young Faculty to Joy Scaria, assistant professor, Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratory;

• Dr. Harold and Barbara Bailey Award for Excellence in Academic Department Leadership to James Clem, department head and professor, pharmacy practice clinical;

• F.O. Butler Award for Excellence in Creative Activity to Christine Stewart, associate professor, English;

• F.O. Butler Award for Excellence in Teaching to Barbara Kleinjan, lecturer, communication studies;

• F.O. Butler Award for Excellence in Extension/Outreach to Russ Daly, professor/SDSU Extension specialist-veterinarian, veterinary and biomedical sciences;

• F.O. Butler Award for Excellence in Service to Veronica Shriver, senior computer support specialist, animal science;

• Edward Patrick Hogan Award for Teaching Excellence to Tyler Miller, assistant professor, psychology; and Donna Flint, assistant department head/professor, mathematics and statistics;

• Excellence in Graduate Student Mentoring to Darrell Napton, professor, geography;

• Excellence in Online Teaching Award to Rocky Dailey, assistant professor, journalism and mass communication;

• Excellence in Online Program Award to online master of mass communication;

• Excellence in Outreach and Engagement Award to Laura Diddle, professor, School of Performing Arts;

• Timothy J. Nichols Outstanding Undergraduate Advising Award to Gregory Michna, associate professor, mechanical engineering;

Faculty Awards for Global Engagement

• Faculty Engagement in Internationalizing the Student Experience to Jose Alvarez, assistant professor, modern languages and global studies; and

• Faculty Engagement in International Research to Heike Bucking, professor, biology and microbiology.

The 2018 Outstanding Researchers and Scholars from the university’s colleges include:

• College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences to George Perry, professor/SDSU Extension Specialist-beef reproduction management, animal science;

• College of Arts and Sciences to Jennifer Anderson, assistant professor, communication studies;

• College of Education and Human Sciences to Andrea Bjornestad, assistant professor, counseling and human development;

• Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering to Suzette R. Burckhard, assistant department head/professor, civil and environmental engineering;

•College of Nursing to Barbara B. Hobbs, assistant dean/associate professor, West River Nursing; and

• College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions to Hemachand Tummala, associate professor, pharmaceutical sciences.

Delivering the Sewrey lectures were (area, name, title, department):

• Creative and Fine Arts: Anthony Lis, professor, School of Performing Arts;

• Research/Scholarship: Christin Carotta, assistant professor, counseling and human development;

• Teaching/Learning: Nicole Flynn, assistant professor, English; and

• Service: Molly Enz, associate professor, modern languages and global studies.
