Family Dollar closing doors

No reason given for closing Brookings store

BROOKINGS – Sunday, Jan. 21, will be the final day in business for Family Dollar, a variety store at 623 Main Ave. in Brookings.

It is one of a chain of more than 8,000 such stores across the continental United States. Each store is billed as a “neighborhood discount and dollar store.”

A call to the Brookings store was referred to Ann Calkins, Family Dollar district manager at Wausau, Wisconsin. She gave no specific reason for the closure.

“I have no answers to that,” she explained. “We are just told that that store is closing, and we just oversee that. This is one of several that are closing, but there are so many that open and close. They relocate them, close them.”

In an email received today, Heather Briganti, public and community relations manager, Family Dollar Stores Inc., wrote: “The Brookings Family Dollar store reached the end of its lease and is scheduled to close on Jan. 21. We have no plans to close other local Family Dollar store locations.”

Family Dollar Stores is headquartered in Matthews, North Carolina.

The Brookings store is staffed by three full-time employees.

Family Dollar stores carry an assortment of items that includes cleaning supplies, discount groceries, seasonal items and toys.
