Feed a hungry hobo

BROOKINGS – The 2017 Hobo Day Committee is looking for people willing to open their homes and feed some hungry hobos next week.

One of SDSU’s longest standing Hobo Week events, Bum-A-Meal is set for Tuesday, around suppertime. The event requires support from the Brookings community in order to continue.

The committee is seeking faculty, alumni and friends of SDSU to prepare meals at their homes for four or more hungry hobos. Some popular dishes are bum stew, spaghetti and hotdishes, but the menu is completely up to the hosts.

To sign up, visit the Bum-A-Meal page on the Hobo Day website (www.sdstate.edu/HoboDay), call the Hobo Day Office at 688-5524, or contact Georgialee Quail via email at georgialee.quail@jacks.sdstate.edu. Provide your home address, phone number, email address and the number of hobos you are willing to accommodate.

Bum-A-Meal began as part of SDSU’s homecoming “Night Shirt Parade.” After “greeting” the opposing football team at the rails, students would wander back to campus, stopping along the way to collect canned goods from Brookings households that left their porch lights on. The cans were brought back to campus and mixed together to create “Bum Stew,” which was enjoyed by all.
