BROOKINGS – The Fine Art Exhibit and Competition, the Brookings Arts Council’s annual juried multi-media art exhibition, has opened at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St.

A free reception starts at 4 p.m. Aug. 24. Winners, along with monetary awards, will be announced during a ceremony at 5 p.m.

Twenty-eight regional artists submitted pieces for a chance to exhibit in this long-running show. Guest juror Jodi Lundgren, curator of exhibits for the South Dakota Art Museum, has carefully selected each piece and will present awards to the winning artists at the reception.

Regular gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, but the BAC will be closed on Saturdays through August.

The exhibit continues through Sept. 15. Admission is free.

Meet the juror

Lundgren is a South Dakota native who earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a painting emphasis and secondary major in psychology at the University of South Dakota.

She joined the South Dakota Art Museum in 2013, after working for nine years at the Visual Arts Center of the Washington Pavilion of Arts and Science in Sioux Falls, where she learned all aspects of museum exhibitions and collections management before serving as curator for the last four years of her tenure there. She now commutes to Brookings from Sioux Falls, where she resides with her husband Jayme, daughter Disa, and son Huxley.

As the art museum’s coordinator of exhibitions, Lundgren is responsible for planning, coordinating and/or curating all of the exhibitions for the museum’s galleries. She manages and designs the exhibition schedule, spaces and content. Her hands are often full, seeing as everything on display in the museum’s galleries passes through them. Those same hands install most of the works as well.

When not carrying art or her children, Lundgren is often tending to the nature and natural spaces outside her home, including their newest addition of backyard chickens. She also enjoys reading and finding connections between different aspects of her life.
