Flandreau, Alexandria advance to quarterfinal matchup

SIOUX FALLS – Flandreau and Alexandria both posted 11-run wins in Wednesday’s second round of the Class B State Amateur Baseball Tournament at Ronken Field.

The Cardinals used a 10-run sixth to put away Dimock/Emery, 13-2, while the Angels took an early six-run lead on the way to a 12-1 win over Clark.

Flandreau and Alexandria square off in Friday’s late game, which is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

 Flandreau 13, Dimock/Emery 2

Flandreau plated 10 runs – eight after two were out – in the sixth inning to pull away from a 2-2 tie en route to an 13-2 seven-inning win over Dimock/Emery.

Bret Severtson went the distance on the mound for the Cardinals as he scattered three hits and gave up two unearned runs to go along with one strikeout.

Jared Campbell went 5-for-5 with a double and triple with three RBIs while Mitch Foster added a double and triple and two runs batted in.

Severtson added two doubles and two RBIs as Nate Henry and Jake Patterson singled and doubled as Flandreau finished with 18 hits, including eight for extra bases.

Jed Schmidt suffered the loss after giving up nine runs – seven earned – on 10 hits and three walks with five strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.

Phil Johnson allowed three earned runs on four hits in the top of the fifth before Jason Schmidt tossed the final two frames – surrendering one earned run on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

 Alexandria 12, Clark 1

The Angels put up six runs in the third inning and cruised to a 12-1 second-round win over the Traders on Wednesday night.

Tyson Gau allowed just four hits and one earned run as he struck out nine Clark batters to earn the win on the mound. Wyatt Kayser struck out two in an inning of relief.

Gau helped himself out with two hits, including a double as he drove in three runs while Cole Wenande went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

Reid Smith added an two-RBI double as John Greicar drove in a pair of runs with a base hit.

Lane Hovde, Bryce DesLauriers, Kyle Braun and Jay Huber each had one of Clark’s four hits.

Huber suffered the loss after giving up six runs – five earned on three hits and three walks in 2 1/3 innings.

Andrew Wegner surrendered four earned runs on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 5 1/3 frames of relief while Zach Toben allowed two runs – one earned – on four hits in 1 1/3.
