Four area teams post wins on first day of state track

SIOUX FALLS – Sioux Valley’s Kamryn Schwartz won the Class A triple jump while the Colman-Egan girls’ 4x800 meter relay team scored the Hawks’ first win in defense of their 2021 state title on Thursday at the combined South Dakota state track and field meet at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls.

This year marks the first year where all three classes of track and field will compete in the now three-day event in South Dakota’s largest city.

Arlington’s Hadley Carlson also took home the top spot in the Class B high jump, while Estelline/Hendricks’ Danielle Hawley had the top throw in Class B shot put.

Schwartz’s jump of 35 feet, 10.75 inches was more than a foot further than Winner’s Ellie Brozik who registered a jump of 34 feet, 9.25 inches.

The Cossacks’ Adison Renkly also scored a top-five finish in the triple jump with a mark of 33 feet, 10.50 inches.

Flandreau’s Sadie Iott was 11th at 32 feet, 8.50 inches, while fellow Flier Lizzie Pavlis was 16th with a 32 foot, 2.50 inch jump.

Deubrook Area’s Akasha Gorecki finished 19th with a jump of 31 feet, 6.50 inches.

In the 4x800 meter finals the Hawks’ team of Presley Luze, Elaina Rhode, Brynlee Landis, and Reese Luze won by just over three seconds. Their time of nine minutes, 52.33 seconds bettered the second place Chester Area team who finished in 9:55.44.

Arlington’s team of Isabelle Steffensen, Halley Miller, Kaelyn Ulschmid, and Addie Steffensen finished 19th in 10:38.79.

Carlson’s jump of five feet, five inches earned her first place in the Class B high jump. Lake Preston’s Jocelyn Steffensen tied for sixth in the same event with a jump of four feet, 10 inches.

In the Class B girls’ shot put Hawley’s throw of 40 feet, 10.75 inches earned top billing. Lake Preston’s Hadlee Holt finished eighth with a toss of 35 feet, 9.50 inches.

In Class AA the Brookings girls had a few top finishes.

The Bobcats’ 4x100 meter relay team qualified third in the preliminaries with a time of 49.43 seconds.

In the shot put Kat Charging scored a fifth place result with a throw of 37 feet, 2.75 inches. Fellow teammate Sydney Grendler finished ninth at 36 feet, 7.25 inches.

On the boys’ side Deubrook Area’s 4x800 meter relay team finished fifth with a time of 8:24.90.

Elkton-Lake Benton’s Jake Hemmen took home fourth place in the discus with a 139 foot, 10 inch throw.

Many events held preliminaries with the top eight results advancing to the finals.
