BROOKINGS – There will be both Brookings City Council and Brookings School Board elections this spring, with three candidates in the council race and four in the school board race as of Friday morning.

On the City Council side, available are two three-year seats, now held by Dan Hansen and Ope Niemeyer. Hansen is not running for re-election. Having filed petitions are Niemeyer, Joey Collins and Cassie Juba.

The Brookings School Board has one three-year seat up for grabs. It’s held by Wes Tschetter, and he’s running for re-election. Also seeking the post are Kyle Dahl, Jacqueline Johnson and Tasi Barondeau, who all filed petitions this week.

Dahl is currently the state electrical inspector for District 3. He has been a Brookings County resident since 2001 and has worked as an electrician for many years.

Dahl said he has been on several church councils in the past and has a background of years of budgetary and financial dealings. He also served in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Navy Reserve as an appointed officer in charge for several years.

Dahl and his wife are active in the Boy Scouts as Cub Scout den leader for their youngest son’s den.

He believes it would be good for the district to have someone on the school board who has worked in the construction industry and has extensive background in construction knowledge. The school board is currently overseeing construction at Mickelson Middle School, and extensive updates are needed at Hillcrest and Medary Elementary schools.

The deadline to file nominating petitions for both races is 5 p.m. today. The city-school election is set for April 14.

Editor’s note: More information about Johnson and Barondeau will be in upcoming editions of The Brookings Register.
