BROOKINGS – The Fourth of July in Brookings will start early with a parade and run late with fireworks.

Line-up for the parade will start at 11:30 a.m. on Third Street and Third Avenue. The parade will start at 1 p.m. The route will head east on Third Street to Medary Avenue, then north to Sixth Street, west to Main Avenue and then south, back to Third and Third. To register a float or more information, contact Brookings Radio.

The fireworks are set to start at the Swiftel Center at dark, around 10 p.m. Folks can park in the Swiftel Center parking lot; admission is free and open to everyone.

There will be no Uncle Sam Jam this year, confirmed City Manager Paul Briseno, citing finances and timing.

“Last year when we set the budget for 2021, we cut many programs because of reduced revenues,” he wrote in an email to the Register Friday.

The city staff has spent the past year cutting expenses and adjusting the budget to make sure vital resources were covered after COVID-19 financially impacted everyone.

The fireworks were reduced by $5,000, and the Swiftel Center chose not to have the Uncle Sam Jam because of the safety concerns at the time, Briseno wrote. Factoring into the decision for this year was the length of time needed to plan an event like Uncle Sam Jam, he added.
