Fourth-ranked Cardinals escape

BROOKINGS – South Dakota State had fourth-ranked Louisville on the brink but could not quite seal the deal as the Cardinals edged the Jackrabbits 66-62 in front of an energetic crowd of 2,506 on Sunday afternoon at Frost Arena.

“I was hoping we’d have a little different result,” said SDSU coach Aaron Johnston, whose team led 24-12 after a quarter and held a 42-32 advantage on the glass for the game. “We had a chance there to really put a little pressure on them late and just couldn’t quite get the big basket that we needed. But all-in-all, I feel good about what we did. We rebounded really well considering the team we were going against; I thought we defended really well considering the team we were going against.

“We just need a few more shots or free throws or things like that to go down – you just don’t get a lot of super easy looks against a team like that, so the ones you get, you need.”

Macy Miller hit 1-of-2 free throws to cut the deficit to 64-62 with 1:45 to go, and the Jackrabbits got a stop on the other end; however, they had an empty possession of their own.

Dana Evans banked in a shot in the paint with 25 seconds to play to push the margin to 66-62.

A turnover prevented SDSU from cutting into the margin as Jazmine Jones made 1-of-2 foul shots with 13 seconds remaining to make it 67-62.

Ellie Thompson had a putback with 3 seconds left, but Arica Carter converted 1-of-2 charity tosses with .5 seconds to go to seal the deal.

“I feel good about what we did,” Johnston continued. “Myah (Selland) had a great game, really was a huge part for us, made a lot of plays. Tagyn (Larson) had a really complete game – offensively and defensively. Madi (Guebert) and Macy did great things, they just couldn’t get the ball to go in as much as they had hoped.

“But we were close. And I don’t feel good because we were close, I feel good because we played really hard, I feel good because we played well and we tried to execute a lot of things. I’m disappointed that we lost but feel good about how we played.”

Selland was a force during her 22 minutes of action, totaling 14 points, seven rebounds, two assists and a steal. She fouled out with 4:18 left.

Larson dropped in 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting and corralled seven boards in 26 minutes.

Miller struggled from the field, going 3-of-15, and was 7-of-11 at the line while adding 14 points.

The Jackrabbits went 8-of-12 from the field, including 3-of-5 from deep, over the first 10 minutes, doubling up the Cardinals in the period.

Guebert scored five points, Miller, Thompson and Larson added four apiece, Rylie Cascio Jensen tallied three, and Selland and Tylee Irwin both two in the quarter.

Louisville held SDSU scoreless for nearly 6 1/2 minutes in the second, before Larson scored down low to make it 26-21. Irwin added a jumper and Larson connected from deep as the Jackrabbits took a 31-23 advantage into halftime.

The Cardinals took their first lead – 37-36 – at the 4:20 mark of the third. The score was tied at 46-all heading to the fourth.

Asia Durr opened the fourth with a free throw and the visitors never trailed. Their lead peaked at five – 57-52 – following a Sam Fuehring bucket with 6:13 to go.

Durr scored a game-high 20 points and dished out five assists. Carter added 14 points and Myisha Hines-Allen 10.

South Dakota State plays host to Oklahoma on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Notes (from SDSU Sports Information): Miller moved from 26th to 24th in career points at SDSU with 1,245. Thompson now has 1,037 career points and Guebert 958.
