BROOKINGS – Organizers for this year’s Polar Plunge for Special Olympics say it’s not too late to sign up to take a dip.

Special Olympics South Dakota and Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics are calling on all Brookings area residents with daring souls and warm hearts willing to brave the cold for the Polar Plunge on Saturday, April 22. Registration starts at 1 p.m. in front of Ray’s Corner in downtown Brookings, and the plunge begins at 2 p.m.

The annual fundraiser is organized by local committee members, including law enforcement.

At the Polar Plunge, participants raise funds then jump into chilly waters to show their support for Special Olympics athletes and increase awareness for people living with intellectual disabilities across South Dakota. Plungers set their own fundraising goals prior to the event and collect pledges in exchange for the opportunity to jump into icy waters. Above, Deputy Fire Chief Pete Bolzer jumps into the water at a previous Polar Plunge.

Each person must raise a minimum of $100 and can participate as an individual, or can create a team with friends, co-workers or classmates.

Each year, Special Olympics Polar Plunges are held across the country to raise awareness and attract communities to this fundraising event. This year’s plunge will help provide funds for year-round sports training and competition for more than 2,000 children and adults living with intellectual disabilities in South Dakota, at no cost to the athletes. Plunges were held in 13 locations across the state last year.
