Frogs in the bed

One of the stories that we have heard since we were kids in Sunday school is the story of the Ten Plagues in Egypt. God had heard the cries of his people and has chosen Moses to lead them to deliverance. Moses came to Pharaoh and said: “Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Let my people go….” (Ex 5:1). Pharaoh’s answer was: “Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice?” Well, God was about to show Pharaoh exactly who He was. He sent a total of 10 plagues to illustrate His power over the false gods of Egypt. (Every plague was a specific attack on one of their gods).

One by one, these horrible pestilences were doled out on the God-denying Egyptians. They endured lice, blood, darkness, flies, locusts, and hail just to name a few. Each time the result was the same. Pharaoh would relent, promise to let them go, and then when Moses removed the plague, he would renege on his promise.

I want to specifically look at one of the plagues and a fascinating scene I want to examine. The epidemic of the day was frogs, yes, frogs.

They were everywhere, by the thousands. There were frogs in the bed, the kitchen, the cupboards, and the Bible even says they were in the ovens. Imagine along with me the terrific stench as piles of dead frogs were collected and sat in the sun. Pharaoh finally had enough! He summoned Moses and demanded the frogs be removed.

Moses asks a question in Exodus 8:9, “When do you want me to ask God to remove them?” OK respectfully Moses, that’s a really dumb question! When do you think he wants them gone? How about now.Wait, let us hear Pharaoh’s answer. Exodus 8:10 And he said, To morrow. Can you see the confusion on Moses’ face? Really, tomorrow? Pharaoh actually requested one more night with the frogs! One more night with them in his bed. One more morning with them in his cereal. What in the wide world was he thinking?

I can’t answer that question, because I was not there, but can I tell you something today? We do the exact same thing with our sin. We know that it harms us and destroys our family. We know the misery and consequence of sin. But hey, “I will stop tomorrow.” One more night and then I will get rid of those stinking frogs. Amazing, but we are no different. Dear friend, there is someone who died to pay for your sin and offers to forgive and cleanse you from your unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9) Don’t spend one more night with the “frogs” in the bed. Get rid of them today. Deal with your sin, today.
