BROOKINGS – It didn’t come as a surprise that Watertown’s Myah Morris and Deuel’s Morgan Kwasniewski claimed All-Around honors in their respective classes at Saturday’s Individual and All-Around State Gymnastics Championships at the Swiftel Center.

Morris won three of the four Class AA individual events – balance beam, uneven bars and vault – to total 38.425 points – nearly two points better than Mitchell’s Maria Krall (36.675), while Kwasniewski claimed the balance beam and floor exercise to edge Jocelyn Krouse of West Central/Montrose, 37.55 – 36.725, for the Class A title.

Rapid City Stevens’ Shay Trimble won the AA floor exercise as Rachel Blue and Paige Simon of Deuel won the uneven bars and vault, respectively, in Class A.

Class AA

Bobcat freshman Rachel Gannon placed seventh in the All-Around with 35.475 points as she finished third on the floor (9.45); placed 10th on the beam (8.825); tied for 12th on the bars (8.375); and wound up 14th on the Vault (8.825).

Sophomore Lily Siemonsma scored 33.7 points for 15th in the All-Around competition while senior Cydne Munson finished 17th with 33.55 points.

Siemonsma’s top individual performance was on the bars, where she placed seventh with an 8.7. She was 23rd on the floor (8.625); 27th on the beam (7.8); and 30th on the vault (8.575).

Munson’s top individual finish was also on the bars, where she placed 15th with an 8.35. She was 22nd on the beam; 24th on the vault (8.65); and 27th on the floor exercise.

Individually, senior Maci Law closed her career with an 8.275 on the beam, good for 21st place.

Freshman Sydney Grendler placed 17th on the vault with an 8.775 and 34th on the floor with an 8.225.

Sophomore Sierra Stevens was 20th on the floor exercise (8.675) and 35th on the beam (7.275).

Junior Carissa Witt tied for 23rd on the bars (7.85) while sophomore Isabella Portz was 30th with a 7.725.

Eighth-grader Tayla Dobrenski scored an 8.625 to tie for 26th on the vault and 7.3 on the beam for 34th.

“I was surprised to see Rachel place on all four events and the All-Around and All-Tournament team,” said BHS head coach Rachelle Engbrecht, who was inducted into the Gymnastics Hall of Fame by the South Dakota Gymnastics Coaches Association over the weekend. “Lily Siemonsma has been strong on bars, so (her finish) doesn’t surprise me, but to get Cydne Munson in on bars and to get Lily in on All-Around was an extra bonus.

“We had five seniors on the team this year, but there are so many younger girls coming in to fight for their spots, it will be good competition again next year. The state tournament is always a different atmosphere – unless you’re ready for it, it’s going to kind of hit you sideways – to have that extra year of experience will really help them next year.”

Class A

After placing third as a team on Friday in their first-ever state tournament appearance, the Redhawks of Estelline/Hendricks put up a strong individual showing on Saturday, led by Sophie Johnson’s sxith-place finish in the All-Around as the junior scored 34.8 points.

Seventh-grader Sadie Johnson tied for seventh with 34.55 points, while junior Katie Ekema was 14th with 33.75 points. Junior Cora Hofer totaled 32.7 points for 21st in the All-Around.

Individually, Sophie Johnson placed third on the vault (9.2); took fifth on the floor (9.15); tied for 14th on the bars (8.025); and was 15th on the beam (8.5).

Sadie Johnson tied for fourth on the bars (8.5); was ninth on the vault (8.875); finished 14th on the floor (8.675); and placed 15th on the beam (8.5).

Ekema placed 10th on the beam (8.8); tied for 10th on the vault (8.8); was 13th on the bars (8.05); and finished 32nd on the floor (8.1).

Individually, sophomore Kaylee Johnson tied for 31st on the beam with a 7.775 while eighth-grader Brynn Peterson tied for 33rd on the floor exercise with a 7.9.
