Garnet Maxine Hildebrandt, 78, of Brookings, died  Oct. 21, 2018, at Afton Care Center in Afton, Iowa.

Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church in Brookings.  Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.  In lieu of flowers, memorials have been designated to Afton Care Center, Afton, Iowa, and the First Lutheran Church in Brookings.

Garnet was born June 10, 1940, in Volga, to Emil and Wilma (Baker) Hanson.

She spent her early years in Brookings and attended Brookings schools. After receiving her education, she was employed at Woolworth’s.

Garnet married Charles Anton Hildebrandt on Feb. 15, 1959, at First Lutheran Church in Brookings. They lived briefly in Brookings before moving to Sioux Falls. Garnet and Charles returned to Brookings after a car accident that placed Charles in a wheelchair. In addition to caring for Charles and raising a family, Garnet worked at Pamida in Brookings for nearly 25 years and at Kum & Go for 15 years.

Garnet had many interests, including league bowling, playing cards, ceramics, sewing, crocheting, crafts, card-making, and spending time with her family. She loved cardinals and filled her home with cardinal-themed decorations. She especially enjoyed trips to Iowa to visit her grandchildren. Garnet was just as adept with a hammer and a drill as she was with a crochet hook or cardstock, as she worked as Charles’ hands on various home improvement projects.

Garnet was a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church.

Garnet is survived by her daughter, Deb (William) Richardson, of Afton, Iowa; her sister, Velda (Kruse) (Paul) Stanek of Springfield, Missouri; her daughter-in-law, Virginia Hildebrandt, of Bloomington, Minnesota; a grandson; a granddaughter; brother-in-law Donald Hildebrandt, of Brookings; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by both parents; her husband, Charles in 2012; her son, Rodney in 2017; three brothers-in-law, Robert Hildebrandt, Paul Hildebrandt Jr., and Merwyne Kruse; and two sisters-in-law, Delores Hildebrandt and Elsie Hildebrandt.

Condolences may be sent to the family through www.rudesfuneralhome.com.
