Garretson, Canova move in Class B semis

SIOUX FALLS – Canova blasted Parkston, 19-9, and Garretson outlasted Milbank, 5-2, to win Thursday’s quarterfinal games of the State Amateur Class B Tournament at Ronken Field.

The Gang and BlueJays now meet at 1 p.m. in Saturday’s semfinal.

 Garretson 5, Milbank 2

The BlueJays put up three runs in the bottom of the first and then added a couple of insurance runs in the eighth to end the Firechiefs’ season.

Nick Bonte singled, doubled and scored two runs to lead Garretson’s offense. Mike Stephenson added a hit and RBI.

Matt Stevens drove in both Milbank tallies with a fourth-inning double and sixth-inning single.

Dustin Steckler earned the win after giving up two runs – one earned – on six hits with nine strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings. Derek Fischer went 1 2/3 frames of relief, allowing just one hit and a walk with one strikeout.

Dominique Boerger went the distance for Milbank in the loss and surrendered five runs – three earned – on six hits and four walks with eight strikeouts.

 Canova 19, Parkston 9

The Gang overcame a 5-1 deficit after an inning by banging out 22 hits and taking advantage of eight Parkston errors to cruise to the 10-run win.

Canova pulled with 5-4 through four before taking the lead for good with a five-run fifth.

The Mudcats got within 11-9 with four runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Trey Krier and Jason Miller combined to shut out Parkston the rest of the way while tacking on eight more runs over the final three frames.

Derek Miller picked up the win for the Gang after giving up eight earned runs on seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.

Justin Miller gave up one earned run getting out of the sixth on two hits and a walk with one K before Krier tossed the seventh – allowing one hit and walking one. Jason Miller struck out two Mudcat batters over the last two innings.

Justin Miller drove in five runs on two hits, including a double, while Krier and Mike Newman each had three hits and two RBIs as Newman also hit a double.

Tim Gassman plated three runs with a pair of singles.

Only eight of the Canova runs were earned as Brady Nolz suffered the loss for the Mudcats after giving up 11 runs – six earned – on 14 hits and three walks with one strikeout.

Jake Weber surrendered five runs – one earned – on three hits and a walk before Riley Hoffman finished up the eighth and allowed two unearned runs on two hits. Dillon Stadlman threw the ninth and gave up one earned run on three hits.

Weber tried to help himself out with a double and two singles to drive in three runs, while Matt Malloy singled and doubled to plate a pair.

Spencer Lucas added a two-run homer in the five-run first as the Mudcats batted around, picking up five of their 10 hits in the frame, including three for extra bases.
