Garretson, Larchwood advance to Class B Tournament semifinals

MITCHELL – Garretson and Larchwood posted quarterfinal wins on Thursday night at the Class B Amateur State Baseball Tournament at Cadwell Park to set up Saturday’s first semifinal showdown.

The BlueJays jumped out to an early lead and then hung on to beat Winner/Colome, 6-5, while Larchwood cruised to a 15-2 thrashing of Irene.

Garretson and Larchwood face off at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

The BlueJays used two walks, a base hit, a wild pitch and a Winner/Colome error to score three runs in the bottom of the first inning before stringing together three straight singles in the second to for a 4-0 lead through two.

The Pheasants finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth with a lone run on four hits in a row before leaving the bases loaded.

Winner/Colome made it 4-2 with another single tally in the seventh when Lakin Neugebauer singled, stole second and then scored on Austin Richy’s two-out base hit.

Garretson responded with two runs in the bottom of the seventh and the BlueJays needed them both as the Pheasants sent eight batters to the plate in the top of the ninth to come away with three runs before stranding the tying run on third base.

Derek Fischer earned the complete-game win after giving up five runs – three earned – on 13 hits and two walks with 10 strikeouts.

Brady Bonte led Garretson with three hits and an RBI as Nick Bruning drove in a run with a single.

Neugebauer finished with three hits for the Pheasants while Richey plated two runs on two hits.

Jared Donahue suffered the loss as he allowed six runs – four earned – on eight hits and eight walks with 14 strikeouts in seven innings of work.

Terrell Bauld set the BlueJays down in order in the eighth.

• Larchwood 15, Irene 2

The Diamonds pounded out 15 hits and took advantage of six Irene errors to end the game in seven innings via the run rule.

Larchwood scored four in the first; added a single run in the third; tacked on seven in the fifth; and finished its scoring with three in the seventh in the rout over the Cardinals.

Koury Kramer led the Diamonds with three hits, including a double, as he drove in three runs. Chase Vander Feen added three hits, including a double, for a pair of RBIs, while Mitch Peschon singled and doubled and drove in one.

Brent Ripperda added two hits and an RBI as Katon Grevengoed went deep in the seventh with a three-run homer.

Brookings native Mason Winterboer plated both Irene runs with a single in the second inning.

Ryan Brasser picked up the win as he gave up two runs on seven hits with 10 strikeouts.

Simon Healy was saddled with the loss after allowing 11 runs – eight earned – on 11 hits and two walks with one strikeout in 4 1/3 innings.

Alex Loes tossed the final 2 2/3 and gave up four runs on four hits and a walk with five strikeouts.
